Ron:

They work real good if you can get a scale that's suitable. Even more fun are arial pictures looked at in stero. One can spend hours looking at the detail.

Egon,

Your thermometer explanation has me thinking your name is appropriate.. egg-on, no offense intended. Really, this is a great forum and plan to join as a member.. also I realized the error on degrees in my post :)

I don't mean to offend anyone. It's just that I do have problems expressing myself in an appropriate manner. Linguistics are very hard for me.

I did spend a few years surveying and all the information I posted is fitting and appropriate for many years ago as was indicated. There also seemed to be be a lot of discent on definition of slope in % and an angle in degrees and what they mean and how they are derived.

Thanks Guys!
Now i just have to wait for the clay/mud to dry up enough to tromp the hills. I have a couple compasses, but don't know what the heck i clinometer is, I'd guess it's that piece that folds over the compass face, and stand verticle when your using it .....but i never knew its name, let alone how to use it. But thats okay, i can handle doing it with a tape and level.
Thanks a bunch guys!
What a cool list!

1. Get a goat, they will trim and fertilize your lawn and handle a slope steeper than 45 degrees. 2. Just fasten a section of a log to the back of your car or truck when you go down hill to grade your drive. This will also save on brake jobs. 3. If no. 1 gets in the wife's flowers you know what to have for supper. 4. A missstep can give you a greater appreciation for the saying "Have a nice trip" when you live on mountain property. 5. My head hurts after all the math on slopes so I thought a little humor break was needed! Sorry guys. Too dumb to know better but happy as a clam!

Just remember, doing this will give you an average slope %. It won't take in account any sudden dips, holes,etc...the things that can cause your tractor to roll or lose control.
So, while you're making your measurements, keep an eye open for other potential hazards!

Good Luck!

Good points Roy. Thanks. I've had some experience with traversing hills like that; but i still have to admit to being slope shy. Actually the slopes I'm talking about I will only brush hog going up and down. I have room at the top to make turns, but I'll need to do some work at the bottom to even be able to turn around safely. I know they seem rather steep to me, but calculating the slope will help give me a point of reference; if the slope is over 35 i might reconsider brush-hoging it at all.
Thanks.
