3" is really hard on a brush hog. Conventional flails aren't that great.

There is a couple of shrub / tree grinders out there that work great, heavy duty flail type mowers, but honestly go rent a dozer

Carl

YOU will be better to first hire a bull dozer to push up all the 3 and 4 inch trees the cost will be nothing compard to breaking something on your new flail mower.
after its done then you will keep it mowed with the flail. you didnt say how big and area you needed mowed but a bush hog that can cut 4 inch trees will require a large HP tractor too like 60-80hp.

How dense is this 3" growth? If trees that size are here, and there you can probably mow arouind them while you dig them out with your tractor, or just cut them off flush with the ground. If the growth that size is dense I would hire a guy with a mulcher to come in, and make short work of them. What kind of growth it is makes a huge difference too! I'm not backing into any 3"+ maple with my rotary cutter! Pines, on the other hand would probably push out OK with the loader, and I have used one tine on my forks for some species that size, or used the two pushed right together. Every circumstance is different so a picture of the area would be a big help in giving advice.

Woods brushbull 6000 or 7200 or 8400 would be able to handle the 3-4" saplings. There are more variations to the BB line than there used to be (don't know if that's good or bad ). The old ones were about 1300# for the 5' cutter w/o chains. About 1450# with chains. A 35-40 hp tractor can run one, but a 50-60 would be more up to the job.

But, the real HD cutters are 2x what the real MD cutter cost and they are 3x what the cheap ones run. You must have a lot of $$ or a lot of land with the 3-4" trees for it to make sense.

Was hoping I could pick up something decent for a few grand, used but not beat all to heck. Doesn't look like its going to happen... I plant food plots most weekends for people in and around NC, I wanted to use it to refresh land used for cover for wildlife, usually on a three year rotation. The three year grow is a little much for a bush hog, or at least mine. I might have to stick with a two year rotation.

I had a bronosaurus clear a lot of land does a greatnjob BUT flings big chunks of wood a great distance. Since it was on the edge of a hay field, had to spend a great deal of time searching for the wood pieces so they don't get into the hay machines. But for overgrown pastures, its great.
