My Montana / LS tractor (Mitsubishi engine) states to use 10/30 Diesel oil; that is what I use. My manual has a temperature chart that you can use to pick the best oil grade depending on you ambient temperature (i.e. Florida vs Canadian temperatures).

This is from the Mitsubishi engine operators manual (not LS or Montana); the graphics pretty much explain it

use a c rated oil that meets your temp / climate range.

much of the us is 15w40.. northern areas will be 10-30 and in some extreme hot areas I have seen 40w straight.. though it's not good for moderate climates due to wear on starting.. IE.. 15w40 being better..e tc.

Pretty much any of the diesel rated oils- I use Rotella-T 15w40 because I used it in fleet applications and it was great. There's also Castrol and Mobil Delvac and others. As long as they meet specifications they are all good, use a decent filter and change every 100 hours and they will all work fine.

The owners manual for my German diesel engine says to use only HD30 oil, so I'm using Mobil Delvac 1630.

I figure since they built it, they would know the best oil to use in it.

I use straight weight 30 or 4O oil unless it is a synthetic. Why do you think the manufacturers recommend straight weight 40 or 30 oil unless the starting temps are very cold? The additives in oil that make it a multi viscosity oil can cause the piston rings to stick in the ring grooves. Of course this occurs after many hundreds if not thousands of hours of operation so the effects are not short term; like smoking I suppose.

Also, I look for a CI rated oil since the ZDDP is higher. I have used practically all of my Rotella CI oil so the next trip for oil will be to a CAT dealer for off road diesel engine oil.

The bottom line is this: Any oil is better than no oil.
