I have looked around and see several mentions of snowchains.com, and their prices do see good compared to some others I have found on the web, however it says their chains do not come with the tension system and tools needed to work with the tensioning system. These things seem to be included to some extent on other sites. I have not used chains before so I am wondering if I actually need the add-ons and/or any of the tool recommended at tirechains.com? Does anyone simply use bungee cords for tensioning the chains?
Thanks!

What about just letting some air out of the tires, then when you get the chains on air 'em back up

Tirechains.com two link chains. Get the tensioners, they are awesome. A lot of hours on mine in the last 7 days...

I bought an old used pair{craigs list}, cut them to fit my tractor, and fixed a few links. I have used chains on all types of vehicles for many years{35+}. I've never once used a tensioner. I have let air out of tires and other tricks to get them as tight as possible. I also use quility rubber bungies or a rope in between links{outside of rim} to pull things together. I use chains EVERY winter and have never had any issues, even did this back when I was driving tractor trailer. Not saying tensioners are bad, Ive just never needed them.

I got my 2 link V bar chains from tirechain.com and the tensioners are from Lowes AKA bungee cords

I use the black rubber bungies. Cheaper to buy, readily available, and cheaper and easier to replace if needed. They've gotten the ultimate workout with the recent snowmagadden we've had.

My rear tires are fluid filled so I don't see letting any of that out and putting it back in as a real option. I guess it's either the tensioners or working it out with some bungee cords of some sort.

Royboy; I have not let air out of a tire in 10+years to put chains on. Getting them flat and straight is the real answer, and bungies work great.

Royboy,
I agree with 20 20 don't let the air or fluid out. Get them flat and after you first put them on drive around. They'll find there own and you'll be able to tighten them up some more. You'll just have to keep playing with them until you get them right.
