Best Place to Purchase Grass Seed?

Hi John:
I don't know if it's the "best" place online, but I did find a very interesting mix called "envirolawn" at http://www.outsidepride.com/envirolawn.asp
Pretty expensive, but looks to be very low maintenance, low water, and hardy. I bought five pounds to test out on the part of our property that edges the lake. It's rough there, and if the seed mix flourishes, then I'll spring for the rest of the property that needs seeding.

Hi Joe:No, not Zoysia grass. This is seed, and is described this way at their site:
"This blend specifically incorporates the following: Serra Hard Fescue, Vivid Perennial Ryegrass, Strawberry Clover, English Daisies, White Yarrow, Baby Blue Eyes, and White Alyssum to create a beautiful landscape."
I've heard mixed reviews on Zoysia, especially on its hardiness. To tell you the truth, I can't imagine plugging 3 acres one by one, anyway. I'll report back to let you know how it goes. It will be a while, winter came late and it is *cold* out there.

First you need to find out what type of grass to even plant. Then you want to make sure you buy certified seed or you will low germination rates and alot of weeds. First thing I would do is contact your county extension agency. They will tell you what grows best on your type soil and they will be able to hook you up with getting a soil analysis. You need the soil analysis to put anything back on your ground before you plant. Next I would go to a reputable feed and seed dealer in your area that deals with FARMERS and not the city places. The reason being is that most of the city places know little if anything about pastures. The Feed and seed dealers make their living doing just that.

I bought Perenual rye grass at home depot and from our town grain store where the farmers get theres. The seed from the grain store grew faster, produced hardier grass, almost all of the seeds took so it came in three times thicker. Cost a little bit more but well worth the price. The only down side is they only sell seed in large bags.

They have a seed for zoysia grass now, no more plugging. Zoysia is said to be a "rough" lawn, thick but not soft enough for my liking. It is also supposed to be a warm weather grass, I think NJ is the borderline. I would hate to find out it's a little too cold for the grass next winter!
