You could also put a couple of self tapping screws thru the joint to hold the pipe into the metal socket. If I were welding it, I would use 7018 electrodes.

I guess to confuse even further, I'd vote for 309 or 312 Stainless or Silicon Bronze Mig or Stick.

309/312 would have been my suggestion too.

How are they "supposed" to be assembled? most of the handrail fittings I have used have a large set screw and not designed to be welded. If they ARE designed to be a welded fitting, as the MFG for the proper process.

Have you asked King architectural metals?

For welding steel to cast iron for decorative work they recommend 6011. It works. Not sure if malleable is kin enough to cast for it to work or not, but the carbon in the flux seems to work pretty decent for gluing those two together. It doesn't crack as readily as other rods. 7018 will crack at the root when it cools.

If not, I'd braze it...

Not sure what other type of fittings there are, but if it dont have a set screw I would assume it is "supposed" to be welded?????

Really would like to know exactaly what the fittings are and what the mfg says
