JI Case 511B
I have a Case 511b I just purchased this summer, with a snow blower. I bought it for work and don't plan to restore it, but I do plan to refurb it for both aesthetics and durability. I haven't had time to repaint it this summer, and being that its main purpose is to keep my driveway open during our Northern Michigan Winter, I don't know as I will be able to do any painting this winter either, unless someone has a suggestion for temporarily doing the tin piece by piece. At any rate, once the snow is done, I plan on hitting it hard core. So, in planning on it, I am wondering what sort of rust remover is considered to be the best? It is in decent shape, but there is certainly a little rust and I was planning on hitting all the nooks and crannies with a rust remover to try and ensure that the paint job will last until I am able to afford to trade up to something with a forward facing snowblower (hopefully). I am a novice when it comes to painting anything, but I have painted a bit of wood. I have never really painted anything metal, my main maintenance and repair experiences growing up were off road motorcyles, which didn't usually last long enough to rust, and if you need to pretty it up, you bought new plastic, not paint. From what I have read about it so far, it seems to be pretty much the same principle as wood, roughen, clean, prime, and as many coats as you can stand, not rushing the drying time, except for rust removal. If anyone has any suggested reading on the subject, or major mistakes that are commonly made, I would welcome any and all advice.

Sand blasting is the best way to remove the rust completely and keep it gone. Paint with epoxy primer, primer and paint. For an average DIYer I would say a wire brush on a drill and some rust converter, then prime and paint. There are also some nice rust encapsulating paint such a POR 15 (about $120 a gallon) that work well and are durable. I have painted over POR but it is not "restoration quality" but OK for equipment

IF you dont mind an orange peel look - consider the 'rust converter' paint..

I was given a homemade rear blade that may have been painted 20 yrs ago and was horribly rusted.. I painted it with 2 coats of Rustoleum paint primer/ rust converter (redish primer color) 5 yrs ago and it shows no additional signs of rust.. It sits outside all year long and the paint still looks great - I never got around to painting it a final color so it only has the primer/converter

just another idea..

Rustoleum Makes a Rust Desolver that is brushed or applied with brush, finshed look is like black paint. or you can paint your color. Bought it at Wally's World in the Auto body section, about $4.00 a can. It worked quite well on my Class 5 trailer hitch, no rust yet, two years running.

Google rust prevention and you will find some good information.

Most times the surface rust is mechanically removed. That leaves the inter granular rust which is usually handled with an acid.

Some paints will contain the proper components to do this.

We use this stuff from the dollar store called works. It's great we clean gas tanks with it.

I have a small gravity feed sand blaster that I was planning on using on most things. But, I am not going for restoration quality, I just want it to look serviceable and protect it from further rusting. The fellow I bought it from stored it in a shed, so its not too bad, but I certainly don't want to let it go much longer without repainting it. The snowblower is worse, but still not terrible, it has about %50 of the paint left. Bearing in mind some of the advice I've gotten, I am considering just using rustoleum on the snowblower, and not bothering to put any real paint on it. Sounds like it is pretty durable on its own, and I am guessing that it will require touch ups much more frequently than the tractor. I have an afton stone drive, so it'll take quite the sandblasting over the course of the winter.

Seen some stuff on one of the Powerblock shows. You soak rusty things in it, and it dissolves the Rust, forgot the name. Would be good for smaller parts.

I use Evapo-Rust for small things. Works great.
