I have similar experience as you. I have a fairly long driveway and really have troubles when edging it. I hate to say it but I think it’s one of those things you have to live with. I’ve tried various string and none seem better. I do keep my string in a zip lock bag with a little water in it.

I have found if you just weed eating tall grass the string lasts a long time. It’s when you get up against hard objects it breaks off.

On my Stihl FS-110 I switched it to a cam lock head not long after I bought it and use the .155 line. So much better than a feed head and it works really well for fighting back the heavy growth/weeds with out constant line changes. I usually put a handful of cut pieces in my pocket and have a few left over when either I have done all I feel like doing or have gotten it all done which takes about 6 hours.

That is exactly what we do. Put string supplies in backpack or pocket for shorter work runs.

I had the same problem with my old Craftsman gas trimmer. Cutting along the walls, it would eat a spool of string in no time. It didn't seem to matter what size or type of string I used.

For most of the work I do along fence lines, walls & foundations, the gas trimmer was overkill. I also got tired of the noise, mixing gas, and draining the carb after every use. As a fix, I bought a DeWalt cordless string trimmer that uses the DeWalt batteries I already have for my tools. It has 2 speeds, and set on low, it cuts most of what I need to do with minimal string use. One or two spools lasts a season. It's also lighter weight and easier on the arm muscles. The best thing though, is the wife can use it! :) She wouldn't touch the gasser with a 10' pole.

I still use the old Craftsman for the gnarly stuff, but that is usually just once a season and I can put up with the excessive string use. I guess it all comes down to having the right tool for the job.

What size string was the largest stuff you tried?

I like the Echo Black Diamond line. Cuts great but like any other trimmer line it's going to break along fences or rock walls. If it's not heavy weeds, just lay off the throttle and you'll break less line.
