I have occasional need of a BH for my L5740, which will pay for itself the first year. I'm leaning toward three point rather than sub frame as it is pretty easy stuff and I'd like to be able to easily remove it since I bush hog a lot.

Anyone have any brand/model suggestions (preferably with a cat 2 hookup) that they have had good luck using?

Thanks.

When we have the request to install a backhoe on a Kubota with a factory cab we use the Woods unit. It is not as tight to the tractor as the BH-90 from Kubota but it is a good unit.

I think you may hear a lot of recommendations here to go with a subframe-type backhoe. The subframe absorbs the huge leverage of the hoe. Even if the digging is easy it's very possible to momentarily put enormous force on the tractor without a subframe. The subframe is designed to be out of the way for mounting 3-point implements so it doesn't interfere with bush hogging. I have a Bradco 11ft bh that has replaceable bushings, spherical rod ends, jacketed hoses, big cylinders. Bradco is a good brand but others are good too.

I would shadow Mr. Rbargeron's comments...quite literally, I can remove and re-attach the backhoe in a similar amount of time as removing and attaching my box-blade. There is the added step of having to remove the lower arms, but on my tractor, I can re-install those in about 45 seconds. I'm sure it'd be a little bit of a pain on a larger tractor (heavier arms), but not impossible.

Knowing the amount of force a BH is capable of imparting on the tractor and seeing several pictures of 3PH top links being literally ripped away from the tractor by a 3PH backhoe installation, I'd be a very strong advocate for a subframe attached unit. Then there are the stories of a 3PH backhoe "popping up" and squishing the operator in the seat...haven't seen pictures/proof of this happening, but it doesn't sound like fun.

Just don't see the small time savings being worth all the risks. My $0.02.

Well, I'll have to rethink this purchase, sounds like the sub frame is the way to go -- that's what happens when a BH newbie tries to think through something using what seems like logic. LOL

You may want to search for posts by TBN member "hayden". He has a L5740HSTC with a Bradco - but has offered lots of good comments in related threads started by other members with L5740's too. Peter's L5740 and attachments are shown in this thread

By the way, it's not necessary to remove the 3PH linkage to fit a 4 point backhoe, despite what the manuals tell you.

I replaced the pins that hold the sway links to the axle with removable pins and cotter pin clips. To attach the backhoe, you just remove the pins and bring the draw bars and sway links together in a bundle in the center behind the tractor. The hoe then fits on fine and the 3PH can be raised up so it doesn't drag in the dirt. You just need to be careful not to accidentily raise the lift too far as it will contact the cross brace on the hoe and surely bend it.

I think that the subframe would be just as fast to take off the tractor and faster to put back on. You are not trying to line up and lift/lower the 3pt arms and such IMO.
