Thank you for the response. I seriously thought about getting a reverse rotation tiller when I was in the research phase of the acquisition process. My "logic" finally ruled out the reverse rotation for the following reasons: They take more power to operate, they would have a greater tendency to jam in very rocky soil as the tiller would not be able to "throw" the rocks as well as a forward rotation tiller, and the forward rotation tiller would tend to push you forward and over immovable obstructions (a loud and bucking  event). I do not know anyone in my area who has one so I am curious as to how they would work in the heavy, clay based, rocky, and rooted NE "soil". In theory the tiller working against the forward motion of the tractor would probably make a finer bed. Jay

I ran a Landpride 1558 (58" wide) on a 1710 and it worked fine. The 1558 is an excellent tiller.

Thanks- Andy :D. I have no intensions of replacing my CCM M-160 at this time. I just was interested in how they work in NE. Jay

I bought a landpride 58" reverse tiller in july of 07. It does exactly what landpride claims. I ran the tiller on a b3030 with 23.5 pto breaking sod, one pass would have been sufficient, it broke through the sod with ease and actually rolled the sod and stones under as advertised leaving a fine powder on top. The dealer delivered a good price of $1899. no tax, suggested retail is $2300 to $2400.

$1899 is what the the dealer up here quoted me as well for the 58 Inch reverse. I did not price out a forward rotation as he only had the revers models on hand.

Don't know if you have a Farmtrac dealer near by but if so you may want to look at their product as well. This summer I bought a 48" Farmtrac for my JD455 Diesel L&G tractor (and yes its Cat 1 and 540 rpm). The 455 is 18 PTO hp and handles the 48" fine so I'd think your tractor would have no trouble with a 60".

It seems like a real quality unit and I paid $1500 for it. I think a 60" was around $150 more. These are all gear drive, 6 tines per flange (some brands only have 4), and have a slip clutch. The salesman also sells Woods and thinks the Farmtrac are a much better deal for the money.

Thanks to the ice-age glaciers, here in western NY state we have loam, sand, clay and all of it has lots of rocks. This area is famous for all the 1800's era cobblestone farm houses. I've seen cobbles the size of grapefruits shoot 30 feet out the back of my tiller. I've also hit concrete blocks, bricks, and metal parts. This is just tilling in suburban back yards. I can't imagine a reverse rotation tiller working well in these conditions. If you have fine, stone free topsoil they probably work excellent. But, in my case, I'd rather have all that stuff flying the other way.

Let us know what you end up getting.
