Best time of year to plow?

I discovered that the L3400 has NO trouble pulling the two bottom plow, even at idle. In this soil a three-bottom might be ok.

If you set the plow deeper, it might make the tractor grunt a bit more. That said, my dad's first farm tractor was an Allis-Chalmers WC, with 26 drawbar horsepower. It had no trouble pulling two 16s set at about 6". The deeper you go, the more horsepower it takes.

And here's a song about plowing. In this age of chisel plows and no-till, the moldboard plow is a specialty tool, but lots of people can remember dropping the plow in the ground and aiming at a spot on the horizon.

I was aiming at about a 6 inch depth, the bottoms I have are 12", much more than that and they don't plow well.

As well, we have decent soil, there's a fair amount of topsoil in our area, although it IS clay soil. Not a lot of rock, and most of what there is is fairly small.

I can see what you mean about aiming at a spot, all we were doing was keeping the right front in the last furrow, but it was only a short stretch as well.
