Looking to get a trailer that I'll use for a variety of things but would like to occasionally put my B-2400 on it...I'm thinking tandem axle and aluminum but am just starting to research options...I am thinking of getting a Tacoma for the front of the trailer....Toyota sez rated for 6,400 lbs but that sounds almost too high to believe....I'd likely equip the trailer with brakes regardless....

Whaddaya say????

I would not say that this is the best, but it is the trailer that I use for every thing. Steel frame tandem, elec.brakes both axles ( 3500 lb.ea.) 16 ft,deck, the BX2200 with fel and blower is 14 ft.

I generally tow it with my work truck( 93 Dodge CTD 2500) sometimes with the wife's 3500 Chev.

I have been told that the only advantage of aluminium over steel is that steel will rust if it's not looked after. Lb. for Lb. the strength is about the same, and steel is easier to repair.

Aluminum is going to be spendy, and there aren't too many mfgs who offer a flatbed. ATC and Featherlite are two that come to mind on this side of the country.

What else are you going to be hauling?

A modest steel and wood trailer will cost you <<$3K new and won't weigh more than 2,500 lbs. An aluminum is going to be $6k and weigh half that.

Your DMV is going to dictate whether you have to have brakes on the trailer. Anything capable of hauling a tractor certainly should be so equipped. IMO.

6,400 lbs on Taco with just a ball hitch will be an adventure. I bumper haul 8K lbs in an enclosed trailer with my 2nd gen Tundra and have white knuckles when the load distro/anti sway hitch isn't installed.

Your truck will be fine with the proper tow equipment in use. Driven sensibly.

My Tacoma's rated for 3500 lb. The V6's go to 5000. Unless they've completely redesigned the truck in the last year or so, I'd think you're talking about a Tundra.

I just drove to Ramseur NC to pick up my new trailer from a company named Kraftsman. The trailer was made to my specs and it is 18' long by 82 inches wide inside at the floor. Seven thousand pounds, brakes both axles, side and front pockets, 12" rail, with rub strips for full side tie down anywhere. The rear gate is leaf spring assist and boy is it ever light as a feather to put up. I also had them make a 60" side swinging gate so I can load a pallet, ATV or my zero turn on the trailer. They had a side ramp available but it is in the way when backing up and looking over your shoulder so I drew the plans for the side swinging gate and they said ok and made it for me. I'll use a set of tri fold ramps to load with. The other aluminum trailer that is a great unit is the Aluma LTD I have one of their models 6810 and love it for the ATV or zero turn use. Scaper

The Tacoma with factory hitch package is rated for 6500#. Rating is far less with an aftermarket setup.

I have hauled 4000# with mine and it's an easy pull. I also haul my B2410 when necessary. I have a single axle, tilt bed trailer. Tandem axle would be very easy pull.

This is a 16' plus 2' beaver tail rated 10K. I would go tandem to distribute the weight better. It is very easy to quickly run out of length. Electric brakes are a must! Philip.

Not so. An alum trailer that is equivalent size/strength to a steel trailer should be at least 1/3 lighter. THAT is the main advantage of alum. ...But you pay for it. Alum can be more corrosion resistant, but in certain environments (salt water) it can be worse.

I'd post your question in Trailers and Transportation sub forum. That's where the trailer experts hang out more.

As a newby owner 3 years ago, I bought a 12 foot 3500 lb aluminum trailer for my BX24 TLB. After owning it for a very short (put not intended) time, I had to modify the trailer (gate due to overhang of BH). After a time, I realized that going to jobs here and there, I was bringing more and more gear with me.......on this trailer.

Curiousity started me figuring out how much weight I was hauling. I frightened myself with a couple of loads that I had hauled without figuring this out. Good luck rather then good management, to say the least.

Length and weight should handily exceed what your currently carrying, and what your most likely going to carry. Safety first.

Short answer, a 3500GVW should work, but if you're a typical guy, you'll be at least thinking about exceeding it's capacity in short order.

Geeeeez, who says we don't learn as we get older, and I've learned a lot here on TBN.

My old B8200 was similar in size and weight to your B2400. I have a Carson 16' 7000lb trailer, dual axle. It has brakes on one axle(I want to add to the second axle).

My trailer is 1600lbs. The B8200 with loader and scraper was about 2300lbs based on tractor, loader , and scraper data. Add another 100-200lbs for chain, binders, and "stuff". I was running ~4000lbs total.

That is well within the Tacoma rating noted.

I would maked sure you have a solid hitch with the ratings you need. And, make sure you have a good brake controller.

I would be cautious driving, and you would probably be OK.

FWIW, I have had to make a couple emergency stops after being cutoff by little cars zipping across lanes with no regard for those around them. Fortunately, I left safety room. Even so, I could really feel that trailer, even behind my 3/4 ton. Strange feeling, panic stop, anti-lock brakes activating, and feeling of the trailer behind you. That, is one reason I like my 3/4 ton, even though I do not run it to capacity most of the time.
