Best type of dog

Im in the no beagle camp, and yes to lab mutt camp. Labs very friendly and even more so protective of their family. the will also tend to me referees for the kids most often stopping the aggressive child..

we have a Husky Lab mix., brilliant smart, but has more Husky with the running just for the fun of it. Smart as an be but tends to run in a straight line. works well in fenced area and is OK with the husky digging problems...

Inside never make a mess except eating lol then its all bets off! he is 65 lbs and is on the ave size for husky but small for Lab.

Yellow lab always wins out for me, very loyal and trustworthy but can be holy **** as pups. Australian Sheperds would be next, them maybe a bassett or blood hound.

I have Labs and will never be without at least one and maybe at least two.

Golden Retriever is a close second.

Aussie Shepherds and Border Collies are both good dogs and both are smaller than Labs & Goldens.

Sounds like the general consensus for best dog under 50 # is an underfed Golden or Lab.


By the way, Pilot, I know several duck hunters who would argue with you about labs being better hunters than goldens (although I agree with you there). I also know several lab owners who would argue with you about goldens being better pets (myself being one of those).

Put me in the lab camp as well. Although I don't currently have one, I hope to get a labradoodle soon, as the wife has allergies. If you look at a labradoodle you can easily get a medium sized one in your prescribed weight range. I hope to get a hunting labradoodle from a breeder in the thumb area of MI soon.

Almost anything but a Siberian Husky. Ours is not good with children, they 'talk' a lot (you have to have one to really know what this means), ours is not all that good with adults come to think of it. As Spiker said, Siberian Huskies are very smart, which is probably half their problem. Our yellow lab is the best, friendly almost to a fault, e.g., if your hand is hanging off the arm of a chair, our labs head will appear underneath your hand waiting to be petted. Her original owners were breeders and she got an infection in her intestine which resulted in extensive surgery to remove a lot of it due to gangrene. So, she was not perfect, had to be on a special diet (rice and hamburger) for a long time and they just didn't have the time. We got the lab as a rescue foster dog and could not give her up so we adopted her.

I hadn't seen that. Very funny and very typical of how they 'talk'. :laughing: We have 2 other dogs plus a foster dog and when the husky starts 'talking', the other dogs figure they should join in the only way they can by barking our howling (huskies howl, too) and quite a chorus starts up.

We have a shepherd mix that doesn't stray too far from home but is over your weight requirement. Try looking on Craig's List for a young mature dog. The owner will be able to tell you its characteristics and you can determine if they fit your desires. Many undesirable characteristics can be present regardless of breed because of the individual dog's personality.

Sorry for your loss. My usual routine with the loss of my dog is cry a lot, morn some and wait a while then get me another heart warmer.

Golden Retreiver or Austrailian Shep. Golden is probably the safest bet you can get if you want to stay under 50lbs.
