I've got all I can handle with a tractor and grapple just gathering up the brush. I'll never finish 'mowing' as you suggest.

If you can get to it with a grapple you can get to it with a mower. You don't need to gather it and put it in a pile. Just mow it where it lies as long as it is less than three inches and it can't be nestled between rocks. You would be building piles and I would be finished and drinking beer.

Up here our soil and water is so acidic you could use it in a battery :)
The more ashes we can generate the better as it saves buying lime for the garden.( Aluminium dog dishes pinhole in less than a year.)
I'd burn it if I could.

BTW, you may want to check your figures. I've done some burning before and I know I'll end up with a whole lot more ash pile than a garbage can full unless you're talking about a dumpster. And, it's not the ash that will provide the leftover bulk; it's all the half-burned stuff that will be left. But thanks.

Fair enough. Burn it, then dig a hole and bury what's left. Waiting until snow is a good idea, unless you are in some kind of rush. If so, then I'd go with the 'rent a chipper' suggestions.

I have a friend who lives in Valley Center in California. He is on 80 acres. He has a firewood business as a sideline. He dug a pit the size of a grave 3 wide 7 long 6 deep. He fills it with his loader and digs out the ashes with his backhoe. He gets rid of rotton wood and bark. David

i usually start with a pile of brush about 5' tall and 8-10' in diam.

it creates a good hot fire without being overwhelmly large. I usually have a second pile 20-30 feet from it that i pull out of and add to the burning pile.

it makes it easy to manage the fire and keep it going with out becomeing a rageing inferno.

I do most of my burning while the snow is still on the ground or while it is raining, can burn an awful lot in one afternoon.

Down here in Lincoln Co the Solid Waste people come round on a schedule with a grappler and take away anything less than 6" wide and 6 feet long.

Other than that i wait till we have some rain and have LOTS of bonfires.

I just happen to be down in Ruidoso as I write this. The Lodge at Sierra Blanco.

Up in Tierra Amarillo county they don't provide much of any kind of services. There is a landfill about 70 mile driving from my little place.

I prefer to burn smaller piles, but have burned several massive piles. FWIW, my MIL who worked for the EPA for decades condones burning which surprised me. I figured she would have lectured me instead.

R Walter,

There are machines called "Mulchers" that go on medium to large track equipment (ASV is popular). They can turn a 4-6" hardwood tree into mulch in no time at all. It sounds like a match to your needs. You would probably have to hire in a service as they don't rent the equipment (usually).

You can find out about the equipment in the "construction" section of the forum - search for mulching.

I used to live in Rio Rancho - back when it was a small town '85-'88. Talk about growth!
