-----------------------------------------------------------------------I have a six foot ground rod that I need to remove and I have a BX25, what would be the best way to do this without damaging the pasture to much?
For pulling anything with a chain or rope I've found a knot called a clove hitch works really well. The more tension that is applied the tighter the knot grips. You can find the knot in the scouting book but you may have been Navy to use it like pictured.
One advantage is the the ends of the chain or rope doesn't need to be dealt with at all. Don't even touch the ends or attempt to draw several feet through anywhere.
To make the knot anywhere in the length of the chain, throw a counter clockwise loop "A". Beside "A" throw a second counter clockwise loop "B". Set loop "A" on top of "B" and put the two loops on what ever you are attempting to pull, vertical, horizontal or any angle and cinch them a little.
To remove, wiggle a little slack, slide the knot off and the knot simply falls apart.
To pull a half dozen or so small trees, this knot over the stumps with a short chain having one hook, all six trees can be pulled with one forward movement of the tractor. Or a dozen with enough chain sections and the main chain long enough.
A few weeks ago I pulled a 6 inch diameter walnut tree with a 7 ft. root system using the clove hitch knot. It works.
