I might have to wear a long sleeve shirt if it gets any colder down here in the mornings!
I have been running the a/c in the afternoon sun. (In the truck, not at the house)

Came here looking for the picture of the tree on the ground and the tractor and operator looking on, with a smile!

Hi all. Sorry I've been absent from this thread for a while. I spent the last two Saturdays re-setting our electric pole and panel. Re-setting Electric Pole & Panel Pictures. If the weather cooperates, I plan on taking down the tree that is the subject of this thread this Saturday. I'll take some pictures and post them. Unfortunately the forcasted high for Saturday is 31 degrees F.

Obed and Eddie, Sorry to resurrect this old post but I printed out Eddies instructions a couple weeks ago and tried this method out last weekend. I took down 3 large trees in about an hour and a half with my 511 bradco. Worked perfect everytime. I have done my share of cutting down trees and it was really enjoyable to just see the rootball come right out of the ground. Trees went over nice and slow. Thanks for this post!

Tim,

Thanks for the update and kind words. I think those who are against using a backhoe to take out trees just don't realize how much easier, faster and safer it is.

I've taken out hundreds, maybe thousands of trees this way, and it's still exiting to watch it slowly fall over. I'm always amazed at how slow it falls. I think it's because the rootball is holding it in place and counters the fall. I don't know for sure. I've cut trees down with a chainsaw, and they always fall faster then I'm comfortable with.

I just wanted to say thanks.

Obed, thanks for the thread. When you posted I just thought cut the tree down and dig out the stump. Never would I have thought that there was another way to take the tree down and remove the stump.

Tim_in_IA, thanks for bring the thread back. After I the first time I read the thread I stopped reading any follow-ups. After I read your late reply I decided to read through the whole post.

Eddie, thanks for all of your insight. It has been a pleasure to read your posts (in this and other threads) and to learn a lot of new ideas.

I gave the BH method of removing trees and stumps a try last weekend and I was amazed at how well it worked. Actually, my plan was just to remove stumps from prior tree removal, needless to say the stumps are still there but a bunch of other trees and stumps are now missing. I went back yesterday (Saturday) and removed about another dozen trees. One tree (cluster) was 3 trees that had grown together, each was about 8"-10" in diameter where they seperated. That same cluster had another 8-10" tree coupled with a 4" tree growing along side of it. A total width of close to 36" (i will measure it when I cut it up). This is a stump that would have been very difficult to remove with the CK20 and 6.5' hoe. But, by using the weight of the tree to remove the stump it came out fairly easy. It took about 4.5 hrs of digging (started off using the 16" bucket but found the 9" to work a lot better) now all that needs done is to get the chain saw out and start cutting.

Thanks again to all for a method of tree removal that I will continue to use and it will save me a lot of time.

Yes, thanks for bringing this post back to life for a newbie like me. I've been trying to wade through some older posts, but there are so many I've resorted to specific searces and the "24 hour" link.

I also had no idea you could do that with a backhoe. Thanks Eddie for your detail and Obed for the pictures to help with my lack of vision. I only just bought my farm last year and have already had to cut several trees, some large enough that my 18" bar will barely get it done. I'm particularly concerned about one >28" across that is dead and probably rotting inside like crazy that needs to come down. I read the literature that came with my saw and started learning on smaller trees, but now that I've found TBN and these threads I've realized how much more I have to learn felling trees.

Eddie, after reading your stuff I called my dealer and priced a backhoe for my Ford 6610. :D I can't afford it right now, but I'm probably going to put my logging efforts on hold until I can afford it or can find one cheaper. I have tons of very large trees to take out where I want to put a pond. When I get to it I'll start a "project" thread - though it may be quite some time for me to get around to it. Thanks again!
