I put this under Buying Advice, but I really need Selling Advice. What is the best way to sell a tractor and all the attachments?

I've listed it here in the classified section, but does anybody have any good experience with Craigslist or eBay, etc? I have a Deere 4120 with grapple, forks, brush hog, chipper and stump grinder, and I'd like to sell it all as a complete package instead of breaking it up.

Any advice is much appreciated.

I have had good luck selling on Craigslist just beware of scammers. It is probably your best bet as it targets the local area and tractors are not cheap to move long distances.

There are fourteen tractors for sale via eBay, within 50 miles of Zip Code 44202 at this moment.

Take a look: Tractors | eBay

With eBay and Paypal, you know you are going to be paid.

I sold my Kubota B3300SU tractor and four implements on eBay, individually. I listed the tractor at a fixed price of $14,000, the implements by auction. None of the purchasers elected to visit and inspect the equipment before bidding and paying. The tractor sold locally. The implements were purchased by out-of-state buyers from Texas and Georgia who picked up. I did not ship.

EBay is a business. Be prepared for its seller fees. You pay only if the listed item(s) sell.

You will be paid, just not for long. There is a paypal scam that has been running around for sometime. You will get an offer for your item with a story of the buyer unable to come and see the item, so he will pay you by PayPal and send a hauler to pick it up. Your item is now likely in Canada, Mexico, or otherwise located where you can't find it. The buyer claims the item wasn't as described and PayPal side with the buyer and refunds his money.

If someone asks if you have a verified PayPal account, counter with an escrow account from your bank. Likely you will never hear back.

Craigslist and cash.

I absolutely refuse to deal with Paypal and rarely ever mess with feebay.

I have sold several implements and a tractor on Craig's list.
I would decide it up as not everyone will need each implement so it is mostly better for both you as the seller.

I've bought and sold tractors, motorcycles, cars, etc. on Craigslist with success.

Offer it as a package but willing to sell implements separate. List price of tractor and each individually with a discount if taking total package. Same strategy dealers use when bundling for a new sale.

Thanks for the heads up, I hadn't heard about that.

EBay is a huge public company, listed on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange. EBay completed 2015 with 11,600 employees. EBAy is #466 on Forbe's list of Global 2,000 Business Titans. All depends on eBay's reputation for running and policing an effective, ethical, marketplace.

Paypal is a rapidly growing independent public company, listed on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange, spun off from eBay.

These organizations have hundreds of contract attorneys, practicing in every state, protecting their reputations and their marketplaces.

Once seller is paid, buyer's recourse is against eBay, not the seller. It is possible a buyer could get a refund from eBay under odd circumstances but not from the seller, unless the seller volunteers a refund. The idea of eBay or Paypal raiding a seller's account from either a legal or procedural matter, across two independent companies, is absurd.

EBay's services and protection are not cheap; be prepared for eBay's seller fees. Fees are clearly disclosed before an item is shown for sale on eBay's site.

Two years ago I sold a moderately heavy tractor fitting on eBay. The buyer contacted me after the box arrived, open and empty, because I had not taped it securely. I gave the buyer a full refund, fitting and shipping. Shame on me for not applying another ten cents worth of tape. EBay refunded my auction fee automatically.

I've sold things on eBay in the past, but won't do it now. Dealing with the idiots that bid and then change their minds is just too much of a PITA.

I've had good luck selling on Craigslist, but you have to watch out for the scammers and the low ballers. The protection against scammers is to accept cash only. And don't respond to any requests to send someone your email address.

As to the low ballers, you will get a lot of "offers" to buy your item for about 1/4 of the price you listed it for. Just ignore those people. You will also get a lot of messages such as "What's your bottom dollar?" I usually respond with "My asking price is listed in the ad. Do you want to make me an offer?"

The bottom line is just remember that you own the item, you placed the ad, you set the rules and you're in control. If someone wants to buy it, they have to play by your rules. Don't let them establish or change the rules.

Great advice. I just sold the entire package for cash the first morning it was listed. No issues with Paypal or scammers.

Thanks,

John

I did read you sold and the first day but there are two other good ways to sell: some local dealers will accept consignment and that adds some credibility being on their lot and do not miss local auctions.

Congrats on the successful sale!

Agree with Pappy. Don't let the buyer be in charge. I never tell a potential buyer I will hold an item until he can see it. Once had a potential buyer get all snippy with me for selling an item before he could get there. Make it clear that the first one with the cash takes the item. I always offer to text them to inform them it's sold. I also try to ask a very reasonable price so the item sells fast. I don't like to deal with the idiots too long. Glad you sold on the first day. That's the way to do Craigslist.

Glad it sold - congrats!

As for holding things, really depends on the person, mostly by talking I get a feel if I want to help them out a bit by holding it. Don't it about 5 times and all 5 went through as planned. Others I turned down holding a item for because something just did seem right. Mostly I am in no hurry so even if they don't get it I will sell it sometime a little later.

I sold two Kubota tractors via Craig's List, for the price I wanted. The buyers were local, checked out as living where they said, and in person seemed solid, so I took checks. If there was ANY question, I would insist on cash. I sold a car, also on CL, to an out of state buyer, who paid in cash. The nice thing about CL is it's free, and for stuff that's heavy, local buyers are usually the way it will go. That said, we just recently sold another tractor to an out of state buyer, who paid to have it shipped after he inspected it in person, via Tractorhouse.com, (which also generated a lot of calls...). CL didn't do any good for that one. I have had buyers call and say they would buy something listed on CL, and then disappear on me. So, I won't hold an item, normally.

Had a rent house that suffered structural failure and decided I didn't want to repair it, so I listed it on CL. Got a text from a guy saying he'd buy it via PayPal and his agent would come with the paperwork. I insisted on using an attorney for the closing but he said his agent was licensed to do everything. I quickly realized it was a scam but I played along. He kept insisting I could PayPal and his agent would handle everything. He even told me "I am Air Force in Anchorage." I finally got tired of texting back n forth and stopped. So, yeah, there is a scam using PayPal.
