Re: Bet the Home Depot doesn\'t do this...

My local Deere dealer does all the Pre-Delivery and service work for the local HD. They told me they like the arrangement and are happy to have a greater number of green lawn tractors in the area. In their words, they make as much off a HD PDI as they do on their own dealer mark-up, and they're able to do a lot more PDI's this way. And they don't mind all the extra HD paid marketing attention the Deere brand is getting.

Must say - never saw the dealer have anywhere near the 100+ JD lawn tractors that are in the HD parking lot. One way or another, the JD/HD partnership is selling a lot of extra tractors - even if they are the lower end models.

That's what usually happens when folks get along and cooperate. When I was a teenager and my Dad owned a service station, we sold a few tires and did a lot of tire repair work, but in the little farming community we lived in, we couldn't compete on price with the local White Auto store who, at that time, sold more tires than anyone in town. So we did all his installation (mounting and balancing) and tire repairs, and we both made a couple of bucks and stayed friends.

For us we don't have a Home Depot around to do that kind of partnership. I wonder what would happen if we did though.

Probably the same thing the other JD dealers do that have a Home Depot nearby.

Re: Bet the Home Depot doesn\'t do this...

I'm in the satellite business and we are about 45 miles south of Houston. When it comes to service of course we service them all. But are customers do get priority and discounted service rates. I'm not going to bend over backwards to help someone who went with an out of town dealer and didn't buy from me. So many people just assume that the smaller guy is going to cost more than the big chain stores that they don't even give them a chance to earn there business.

Uh .. sorry steve ... HD sells A JD line of lawn tractors. A line manufactured for sale in HD stores. These are light duty, Sabre/Scotts/MTD class machines.

Dave's point is that JD is a tractor dealer and HD is a discount home improvement store and the expectation should be markedly different.

Wrong.......... <font color="green"> Home Depot and John Deere announce agreement

Deere & Co. and The Home Depot announced an agreement to sell a new line of John Deere-branded lawn and garden tractors in the retailer’s more than 1,400 home improvement stores beginning early next spring.

The agreement places John Deere-branded riding mowing equipment for sale in the mass channel for the first time in John Deere’s history. Models of the new John Deere 100-series lawn tractors will be sold at The Home Depot and at John Deere dealers. The dealers will continue to sell John Deere’s broad range of lawn and garden equipment. Additionally, John Deere dealers will provide support and service for lawn tractors sold both at the dealers and at The Home Depot.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed but the companies said the new 100-series by John Deere replaces Scotts tractors, which have been built for Home Depot by John Deere since 1998. The new 100-series lawn tractors will be offered in cutting widths from 42 to 54 inches with various horsepower ratings. As part of the agreement, Deere said it would discontinue manufacturing the Scotts brand and also eliminate the Sabre brand of lawn tractors sold through John Deere dealers. Deere said the new 100-series will be available at Home Depot stores and John Deere dealers for the 2003 selling season and will be manufactured at an existing facility in Greenville, Tenn.

Re: Bet the Home Depot doesn\'t do this...

Hickory ... please re-read my post.

The point I'm making is that HD sells only the 100 series JD lawn machines.

You cannot get a GT, LX or Garden tractor at Home Depot. The JD marketing department is going after the MTD, Craftsman, Scotts, market with a machine priced and spec'd accordingly. HD is merely the sales delivery channel.

I realize you can buy the 100 series at a JD dealer.
Before the 100 series, HD also carried the Sabre machines. The 100 series are basically rebadged Sabres - they are light duty - and cannot match the specifications of the other LX, GT etc. based mowers.

Got it? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yep, HD only sells the 100 series and maybe the new small Gator if it is in your area.

Re: Bet the Home Depot doesn\'t do this...

Are you sure they are a "rebadged Sabre" ? I have a 130 for strictly mowing and it is great, you get a 2 year warranty with it parts and labor. I bought mine through a dealer and have been very pleased with it.
I realize it is not a garden tractor. A Home Depot opened in my area( the 1st) and there are a lot of green and yellow riding mowers being sold.
