better fuel consumption gear or hst ?

All I can say is the CK20 sips fuel. I put four hours on my manual today and I don't think it took two quarts to top it off. I can't imagine the HST being MUCH different. I suppose if you were working hundreds of acres, fuel costs may be significant, but I would also think you'd have a bigger machine. What are we talking about here? $3.00 a day vs. $3.10?

My B7800 w/HST does seem thirstier than my L4350 w/gear drive. 50% more HP on the L4350 also compared to the B7800. I do tend to use the B7800 more because of the HST and the smaller size though.

Up here it takes around 20.00 to fill the tank. Every weekend I take 10.00 up with me to refill at the end of the weekend. This weekend I didn't even use the whole 10.00 and it ran for around 8 hrs filling up my trailer with dirt and hauling it where I needed it.

I'm just curious about HST. I've never operated any equipment that ran on hydraulics but have used hydraulic tools quite often. I'd always assumed they would be more efficient.

I agree with the observation that it depends on what is being done. For example, my neighbor is in the landscaping business and constantly loads his bucket from big ole piles of specialty gravel, dirt and sand; and then dumps the loads into nearby trailers and trucks. For that short run back & forth, he's twice as fast with HST as I'd be shifting gears; and therefore more fuel efficient. The bottom line is these diesels sip; they don't drink.

I think that a gear drive is the most fuel efficient of all transmissions. I would never argue that point.

Maybe you are to slow?;)

For what I use it for, gear would use less fuel but I'll take ease of operation (HST) over the extra price of fuel I burn.

All I know is Mine gets the same miles per Gallon as the gear setup, when I use my Backhoe:D

And really its about hours per gallon, and even more really :confused2:about the ammount of work performed per Gallon:thumbsup:

Yep, using a backhoe would change the way you think about fuel consumption. I suppose it is the same when using a chipper, splitter or some other stationary attachment

I have a CK25 HST, I usually get between 15-17 hours on 5 gals. of fuel. I'm bushhoging, moving logs for fire wood, making burn piles etc. My buddy has the same Ck25 gear, he says he can't get that many hours out of his, sorry don't remember how many he gets. Don't know how I got along without a tractor all these years, sure is fun.
