Beware if Selling or Buying a Used Truck

I'm new to the OBD2 world, but the way I understand it, you can clear the light but not the code that caused the light to go on, unless the fault was corrected, and x number of clear drive cycles have passed. It will either show a pending code or an incomplete scan.

I'm sure people are clearing the light for sales purposes.

NO,.. you can clear it. MY cheapo HF version i can select clear codes and when you scan it will say no codes present untill one is trigured.

The other thing is that you can just dissconnect battery for 5 minutes and it will clear the memory.

I also can't believe how much used trucks are going for on craigslist, etc.

I bought my '03 Ram 2500 diesel (no emissions junk) used back in 2005 with 14k miles for $26,000. It now has 62k miles and is just as clean as the day I bought it.

Based on what I've seen lately if I were to sell it (and I never will) I think I could almost get what I paid for it, which just boggles my mind.

Some people just call it inflation but we know the powers to be have addressed inflation once and for all. :)

Had I had a vehicle for sale I know I would have priced it too low before this last week when looking at vehicles.

But I THINK if you do either of those ways of clearing the code. A decent scanner will show it and will report incomplete scan.
In other words it's telling you the vehicle will need x number of drive cycles to give a complete (all good) scan. And if the fault that caused the MIL was not corrected the same code will come back up again.

Again, I'm new to this end of mechanics, but that's what I'm finding/ learning.

I have a decent scanner from pep boys, it will even tell you if your vehicle will pass emissions. You can clear those emissions codes, but like I mentioned it will show that it is not ready to be tested because it didn't have time to check all systems. From what I've read and heard, some states testing systems will not pass a vehicle with that pending, but some will pass it as long as the code is not present.

Which is nuts as a brand new ranger sport is like 13,000$ brand new right now with A/C.

According to Kelly Blue Book, retail value of vehicles in excellent condition:
Our 2002 Crown Vic with 62k miles, $6140, NADA value, $7375
Our 2001 Ranger with 82k miles, $7660, NADA value, $8425

In other words, the little truck is more valuable than the sedan, and I reckon that's the reason the insurance premiums are slighly higher on the Ranger.

But I can honestly say, there's no way I'd even consider selling either of them for $10,000.

Base F150 is something like 18,000$ less the rebates right now. 850$ more or so for the ecoboost. The rebates aren't great on the base models but you can get down to 16,000$ or so plus PDI/freight. The 4wd really bumps you up, I think its 23,000$ for a base 4wd. 27,000$ for an XLT extended cab 4x4 with all the fancy stuff.

, but i can in no way afford even a base model new f150.

I'm not sure where you got that $13,000, but I know they do offer some discounts, rebates, etc. However, Ford's website shows the starting MSRP to be $22,425. And to get a new Ranger XLT equipped as mine is, the MSRP is over $24,000.

I can completely clear the codes with my OBD2 scanner...In PA I believe you have to drive 100 or so miles before the emissions scanner will allow a sticker, so cheating is difficult..

I've cleared codes for people who have replaced various sensors and a re-check shows all codes gone.

Just looking at the advertisements in the paper. Base model before rebates is 11,999$ up here.

I went on their website about a year ago. For me to get a v6 model with carpet floor and cloth seats, in ext cab or crew cab (dont remember) and 2wd you were almost at something like 27K. I will dig around again. That sounds like the bargan price for the fast movers like a regular cab v6 truck with rubber floors.

Just looked it up on a semi local dealer.
http://apps.dealerconnection.com/dealers/fairway/showroom?make=Ford&vehicle=F-150

They list the bottom of the line f150 XL starting at $22,990. This im sure is with no rebates but your talking regular cab i bet it has cloth seats and carpet floors, and steel wheels, and the v6 engine for this price.
