Beware of Bungie Cords.

/ Beware of Bungie Cords. #12
Used a couple many years back to secure a raft in the back of my truck. The raft cut loose and the bungie flew back and took out the windshield of the car behind me on the freeway. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Sounds like I've been pretty lucky .... I use bungies to hold a tarp over top of the shavings I buy monthly for horse bedding.
Been doing this for several years now ... 'bout a 10 mile drive.
Unfortunately, I can't envision how I switch to something else to hold that tarp down ... the flat straps could do a fair amount of damage to the box sheet metal if I tighten it up enough to stop the flapping (and use 4 or 5 straps to keep it all taut).
I just make sure that I check my bungees before each use ... and toss the ones that are starting to fray.

Hey did you guys know we always used to refer to those things as "Octupus Straps"

Maybe they looked like tenticles I don't know, but "bungee cord" is now widely used, probably since the advent of bungee jumping I suppose.

Just though you'd like to know. Another piece of Aussie trivia !!

Cheers

I don't know, I'm pretty sure the term bungee cord pre dates bungee jumping. Think about it...you've apparently got this dangerous thing that can put eyes out and smash car windshields without warning. Wouldn't the next logical step be to jump off a bridge with one?/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I soppose there are situations where a bungie cord is just the 'best' choice.. but here are some things to remember.. the black rubber ones are probably a bit safer that the fabric over composite straps' ones.. I've seen the little not in those pull through, or have the stapele come off in bad times. They are also not good at holding loads.. just securing it from slight movement... perhaps a compination of a load bearing device.. like a rope, with a bungie for tension might do better?
just random ideas...
