Hope them PETA bozos don't read this. They got on the Prez for killing a fly, they would really go into a spin for running over opossums with a bush hog. You need to paint 5 little opossum track on your cutter to signify your kills.

I think my story is a bit more human that some of the other ones I have read on here. I think it was in the other topics section where they were talking about beating them with the blunt side of an axe for 5 minutes only to have them walk off all bloody.... Then it went into what calaber bullet to shoot them with.....:D

I've never seen a deer come out of the grass/weeds while bush hogginb my place, but do see my fair share of snakes. I have one field that I do a few times a year that is just full of field mice and rats. I have a red shoulder hawk that hangs out there too and have had him watching me mow. My brother said that he saw the hawk get a rat while he was learning how to use the tractor, but I've only seen the hawk watching me while mowing.

What I really fear are those underground bee hives and wasp nests. I've ran them over a few times and so far, been able to avoid being attacked. From what I'm told, you can get away with it the first time, but never go back over that same spot again. I'm always checking behind me, so when I see a swarm flying around, I change my mowing pattern and avoid that area for awhile, maybe the rest of the day.

. . .then you squat down and find out your front axle drive shaft is now so inter-twined with grass that it will barely turn any more..

The axle was covered from stem to stern with so much grass it was actually pressing on the underside of the tractor (4inches radius)..

Bryan, those of us with enclosed drive shafts don't know how lucky we are. I've certainly wound up a mess on many PTO shafts, but never have to worry about my MFWD driveshaft.:)

A comment about mowing high stuff in 4WD- It can climb up on hidden logs, etc. faster than you can react. I use it only when I have to. Just say'n...

That's where a cab tractor is nice to have. Just run the wiper to get them off the windshield & keep on going.

What is the problem with opposums in the alfalfa? We don't have them, but have groundhogs that make burrows in my pasture. Their holes present a hazzard for my horses - if they step into a hole they may break a leg. I have to fill the holes and chase the groundhogs out. If they are not in my pasture I leave them be. -Mike

Beating them with an axe handle is what we call tenderizing.

I was cutting some alfalfa in my field this weekend and I was almost done with a small patch and I seen a opossum run out. I put the pedal tot he floor to try to catch up with it but it seemed like i went nowhere. The stuff was so thick the load match feature would only let me go so fast becasue I was bogging the tractor.

Luckily she did not run fast and I caught up with her and introduced her to the rotary cutter.... In the next 4 swipes I had 4 more half grown adults come out. This time I was smarter and pulled out of the row to chase them down.... Never thought i would have found them in there.....

You really should cut them up after you cook them. It retains more of the flavor.
