BFG Tires

I've had numerous sets of BFG's in the past, but always 6 ply 15" on Cherokees, Scouts etc. My 1/2 ton Dodge is due for a new set of 17" skins and my tire dealer has quoted a REALLY good price for BFG's, but they only come in 10ply. Has anyone had any experience with these? The 6 ply always gave a nice ride, descent traction and fair mpg....The Wranglers that came on the truck make it ride like a 3/4ton...

I had a set of 17" ones on my last F-150 which was a 4x4 2007 Super Crew. It rode fine but the F-150's are know for having the best ride of all 1/2 tons. We also had a set of 18" ones on my wife's 2004 F-250 Powerstroke 4x4 Extended Cab Short Bed. They were a much better tire than the Continentals I had on my F-350 4x4 Powerstroke Extended Cab Short Bed. Especially in the snow and mud.

All in all I liked them. I am a fan of Toyo and Hankook now days but have nothing bad to say of the BFG's. Just feel there are some that are a little better for the same or less money out there.

I was not a big fan of the BFG's. They fill up with mud and are useless in my experience. Take a look at the individual tire weight. BFG's are some of the heavier tires out there and that does not make them better in my opinion.

I like Cooper and Michelin. YMMV.

I have 16" 10 Ply BFG AT's on my 3/4 ton GMC Duramax and love them, they get great mud and snow tractiion yet are quiet on the pavement, I am sold on them for life, they are a little pricey but I feel worth it.

The price I was given was only $50 more for a complete set than it would cost for 6ply Coopers or Toyos. Worked out to less than the Goodyear Wranglers that are on the truck now (stock tires) I am amazed at the traction of the newer Wranglers (always used to be crap 30yrs ago) but the ride is the pits. If I air down for a better ride, the mpg drops quickly and they start to bulge with ANY load in the box...

Look at the new Goodyear Duratrac's. My neighbor put a set on his 3500 Dmax a year ago and man they do a good job. I had to pull out his truck twice last year with the stockers on it taking wood back to his outdoor boiler. This year as wet as its been he stomps right though it.

I run Hankook Dynapro MT on my trucks now and they are great but probably a little aggressive for you. They came stock on the Nissan Titan I bought a year ago and have since got a set for my SuperDuty Powerstroke. They do great in the mud and snow but are about the least aggressive MT tire you can get so still have decent road manners.

BFG All-Terrain TA's always gave me around 40K, and I replace when they get within sight of the wear bars, and I have a lead foot. They ain't cheap though.

I had a couple of 4x4 F-150's with Wrangles and I got great service out of them. I also had them on my Dodge Hemi 2500 4x4 and they did great.

I have had great luck with firestones, had the MT's on 3 trucks all road well and 2 sets lasted over 35k. My dad put firestone AT 20" on dodge 1/2 ton an he really likes the ride.

Six ply tires will ride much better than any 10 ply will. You could air the 10 plies down, and that would help some. Check out the tire loading tables at Goodyear or Firestones websites for more inflation pressure info.

I had 3 sets of BFG All-Terrain T/A's 285/75r16's LR "E" on 2 different 4x4 F-250's. They did great on dirt/muddy roads and crossing fields or pastures. They were always a little nosiy on the interstate. Also you had to rotate and balence them every 5000 to 6000 miles, to keep them wearing evenly. I averaged around 45,000 miles per set. These were great tires for working within 40 to 50 miles of home towing tractors and bobcats to job sites. They were especially noisy (irritating) while pulling a travel trailer a long distance. My latest set of tires are Michelin LTX M/S-2's 265/75r16 LR "E". The Michelins are great on the interstate, but are horrible off road. So it's kind of a compromise on what you plan on doing with your truck. Since most of my driving with that truck now is on the interstate going long distance I'll probably stay with the Michelins. I also put the Michelins on my daily driver F-150. I previously had Wranglers on the F-150 and really never liked them. They were really prone to road damage and seemed to get flats easily.

Unless something has changed recently that I don't know about, Michelin, BFG, and Uniroyal are all owned by the same people. Over many years, I've used those as well as many other brands. I'm a bit partial to the BFG, and not because my brother used to be a BFG dealer. The last time I bought tires was the BFG Radial Long Trail T/As I now have on my little Ford Ranger pickup. I bought a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria about 14 months ago and it was Michelins on it. I'm happy with both.

Years ago I had some 35" BFG AT's on my 83. I liked them. Wore well and handled loads like nothing. Only wore them down about 1/2 way, and still have them mounted on rims, but after 15 year I'd say they are toast just due to age.

My father's truck came with BFG all season tires stock. He got 70K miles out of them. That is with a mix of commuting, plowing snow, and towing a travel trailer. He replaced them with the exact same tire.

Both sets were load range E. And both would ride a little hard when unloaded. But i think they are a very high quality tire.

I replaced the factory BFG's on my 04 F350 just recently after over 50,000 miles on them. I could have made 60,000 easily. So I put the same tire back on: P265/75R-16 LR E (10 ply). They did well for me with good traction and handling in all situations. I do not like noisy tires and the BFG's were quiet riding on the road. I also stayed with 10 ply tires because of my 5th wheel and other trailer towing needs. I've never felt my F350 rode hard at all--even when empty. Mike.
