Steve, do you do many roads? I know that you do landscaping and leveling of large areas. I think that with your blades flush with the runners that on a road where the majority of the materials is where you want it, that that in itself may cause a problem. If the road is in good shape overall, but has a few small washout areas or pot holes or wash boarding that your land-plane would not scrape up any material to fill in those areas and would actually just slide over the wash boarding. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that it does that. Just that it seems to me that it would. :confused3:

Although my blades are 1" below the runners as you have said, it seems like with less it would take more passes to get the roads in tip top shape. With how my setup is, I usually only need 1 pass per 7 foot width to get all the washboard out.

Hope that you can get that upgraded blade soon, you will be soooooooooooo happy with it. Remember to get the skid shoes with it.

Brian,
I do lots of driveways and have smoothed up some public roads when it is needed. My plane is heavy enough to cut and fill our rocky driveways in one pass most of the time. There have been times where I need two passes. Once I have everything packed down I try to keep it that way, we have a firm base which will have enough rock down deep that potholes dont seem to be much of a problem. Washboarding isn't much of a problem either, our problem is more often larger rocks moving to the surface making bumps.

Lots of the drives I fix were never right to start with and need to be shaped and drained properly with a rearblade. Recover the fines on the edges, fix the crown and then add a thin layer of 3/4 rock on the surface.

I have looked at your pics before and sense that you have lots of sandy soil to deal with. My area to work in is mostly deep granite with a little dust on top (top of a mountain). I live on the edge of the Hondo Valley which has much better topsoil than most of my customers.

I use top and tilt on my tractors to tweak the landplane. When I move forward slightly I adjust the top link to make the plane ride correctly. this usually involves lengthening the top link a tad so that the plane does not pitch forward.

The top and tilt hydraulics is something you will want to address once you get over the initial shock of the new tractor purchase. Makes driveway grading alot easier to do in my book.

Once you get the tractor and grader hooked up a little hands on and experimenting wiht the top link will settle your curiosity. Most of the time you want to adjust the planes skids to ride parallel to the road bed. This may require a slight adjustment each time you change directions. This is caused by the fact that the lower link hitch point is atleast a foot or more above the blades and this makes the plane pitch forward slightly. You have to compensate for this pitching with the top link adjustment.

Steve, the ground must be the difference. Seems like everyone in our area ends up with wash boarding at some point in some place on their roads. Not one person out here has ever put any material down of any kind. Everyone has just made due with the existing DG that is most everywhere. Our road is substantial enough that it supports my brothers loaded semi when it has rained without problems. I typically grade our road every 3-6 months.
