Having grown up with earthquakes in CA, I'm surprised you even felt a 4.3 earthquake. That's barely enough to shake the shelves of grandma's house.
I wondered about that too. i seem to remember reading somewhere that quakes of similar magnitude can have differing effects depending on soil type and bedrock. Apparently the bedrock in the medwest and east is more rigid and that somehow makes the quakes worse.

Haven't really done a thorough inspection, but Nothing so far. Had to straighten all the pictures and things on the wall, though.

Hope all is well. Went through a bunch in So. Calif. over the years.......Northridge, Loma Prieta, Whittier and a bunch of little ones. Can make folks a bit nervous. In the Whittier quake.....we lived in a condo. They said it was a roller.....centered about 15 miles north of us. What was strange......everything on our north/south walls was messed up.....pictures, cabinets fell open.....even our refrig. flew open. Everything on the east/west walls didn't move at all. The quake was like a big wave that rolled through the San Gabriel valley.

In general these quakes do not cause much damage immediately, although there was at least one chimney that fell. Long term thou, cracks in mortar and Sheetrock and a general loosening of the house frame. Our house was built in 65. It is a very well built house and was built well above code at the time. We have been here for close to 13 years now, and since these quakes started up in the last few years we get lots of creaking and pops when we have wind gust and temperature changes. The other issue is your nerves. This had never happened before recent years (at least in my 42 years) and when you get pulled out of a deep sleep with the sound of a sonic boom followed by shacking it starts to mess with you.
I am a conservative person, but the research that I have done about this points completely to waste water injection. I do not want this thread to get political, but I am hopeful that the quake today might open some peoples eyes. People today in the OKC metro felt what many rural folks have been feeling very regularly.
Thanks, Dave

Having lived in Alaska for 20+ years, we got small quakes all the time. You would sit and wonder - is this one going to get big or will it just be a "cupboard rattler". We had the small ones so often that after a while you sort of got used to them -- that was, until the spring of '64.

In any case - they sure do no good for your nerves or sense of well being.

When I was a kid, I used to think earthquakes where fun. Loves it when they happened at school and most of the class would start screaming and climbing under their desks. I was the dumb kid who would like to stand up and pretend I was surfing.

Then after I bought my first house there was a fair sized earthquake and all of a sudden, I became afraid. I realized for the first time that if my house fell down, I was going to lose everything.

Biggest one I've ever been in was 7.1 in 1989

From what I understand, there are earthquakes every day, sometimes quite a few of them during the day. Most are so small that nobody has a clue that they are happening. Lots and lots of small earthquakes relieve the pressure and reduce the odds of a big one.

Since our state is basically owned by oil and gas companies, making changes is an up hill battle. Our governor flat out denied the connection until 6 month or so ago. When she came out and said that there might be a connection, her answer was "everyone should have earthquake insurance" WTF! I do have it, but come on! Earthquake insurance is basically only good for MAJOR damage. Most policies are a 5-10% the value of your house for a deductible. So for our house we would have a $20,000 deductible. I do know that the first lawsuit might make it to trial over the 5.6 near Shawnee in 2011.
