I think this is a case of what is common in the area! We have Eastern Timber Rattlesnakes--but I bet the total number in Massachusetts is 20, probably 1/2 that number of Copperheads.
I have hoped my entire life to be able to see a rattlesnake or Copperhead, I actively go looking for them.
For me to see that snake is a BIG deal.
As you can tell by my name I'm a birdwatcher, we had Sandhill Cranes nest in Massachusetts for the first time last year-right in my town! That news made the paper! It was a HUGE deal!
You Mid-westerners are saying; " are you kidding? If they want to see Sandhill Cranes, come to my place, we have them by the 1000's"
But if you guys from Kansas saw a Humback whale you'd be as excited as I am about that snake!
Just trying to put it all in perspective!
