I would suggest that your arrest and trial would be very likely, unless you would plan on suicide.

By contrast,here's an instance where LEOs were willing to waste their time and mine on behalf of an obivous con game. A man looked at a trailer I had for sale and seemed ready to buy until I told him I could sell it with bill of sale as home made for $50 less than with title with brand name and serial#. His antenna realy went up and started asking why to which I answered that it wasn't in my name and would cost $50 to title in my name in addition to what he paid to transfer to his name. He left and I didn't give it any thought,,,,,until an officer with a nearby city called me. The guy was claiming the trailer was his and had been stolen. The officer said i could save everyone trouble if I alowed the guy to take the trailer and go. I told the officer he needed to start an investigation because I thought the guy was lying. The officer asked if I was unwilling to cooperate which in it's self is a felony to which I said i was more than willing to cooperate with an investigation but wasn't about to give the guy my trailer without one. I asked the officer what evidence the guy had establishing him as the owner,to which he said the guy had the serial # which matched my trailer. "Well yea,he just took the #s off my trailer 30 minutes ago!" The officer continued to nibble around the edge and intiminate me into turning the trailer over or face possible chargers including recieving stolen property. I asked the officer when he wanted to meet at my place with a warrant? This went on another 15 minutes until I said I'm through until I see some paperwork supporting the guy's story. That was over a year ago and I haven't heard another peep. Did I mention the guy belonged to a group which had been taking law inforcement to the wood shed over mistreating them? The lesson is you can't fight city hall but with enough menacing and backing of influential people you can have them join your cause.

Vehicle titles are a state law thing. The rules vary, not only by state, but also by size and such. In some cases it is optional.

Unfortunately you are wrong about this. I have or had a employee that had a gathering at is house on the weekend. One of his guests was getting out of a abusive relationship. The guy showed up high on drugs and started going after the girl and even was hitting kids.

My employee has his concealed carry license and was at his house. He used his gun to try and stop the guy. The guy charged at him so he shot. It did not stop the guy so he shot again. It took seven shots from a 45 auto to bring the guy down. My employee was arrested and charged with murder. He is still waiting for the trial and lost his job in the process. Not because I do not believe him but that he could not go into schools which is a big part of his job. He is out on bail.

Likely he will come out okay but it is not as simple as most believe.

Sounds like something is missing in that story. There have been many instances in Texas where the police do not even bother to charge because the law is pretty clear and juries in Texas nearly always find in favor of the defender. It is a waste of taxpayer dollars to prosecute that type of case. I suppose if it was a potential racial bias thing, the cops may have done it to avoid bad optics.

I feel bad for your employee. I hope he found other work in the meantime. Our place is in another county, but we are probably only 30 minutes from you.

He is in another county as well. He will likely get off but not without a large lawyer bill and a damaged reputation. I know this guy very well and is one of the kindest people you will ever meet. Once all this is clear he will have another opportunity with my company but until then I have no choice.

Also he is being threatened from that guy's family. They are well known for selling drugs and being outlaws. He has moved to a undisclosed location for his protection. It is a very unfortunate situation but when someone loses a life you can bet a investigation will take place and you will be arrested until things are sorted out.

Law Enforcement will direct you to file an online report if needed for insurance.

Standard mantra is file a claim....

Recently in a shopping district with high crime a merchant came to the aid of a woman being robbed and beaten.in front of his shop... he was promptly arrested and if it were not for public outcry it would have been worse...

Devices on the market that you can put on equipment and track it’s location. Won’t stop it from being stolen but may help in recovery.

There are. Some of them seem pretty good. I have one on my trailer. It sends me a text message if it moves, has power connected to it, or leaves the property (geozone). It has about a 3 day battery life. I use solar and the emergency brake battery and tracker battery are always charged and then the tracker will operate another three days. It might help - might give time to find it. Insurance is a good option.
Also, Don't buy a cheap coupler lock. I use Proven Industries Lock made in Canada. Not cheap, but worth it.
None of this will prevent theft. I do anything I can to add time needed. Make it "not worth the risk and trouble." For example, I leave the coupler high and the setback jack all the way lowered. That means to lower the coupler, it takes another separate jack.
I do also have a camera that watches the trailer. But that will not usually give clear enough info. But it does make you feel good to see it still there. It also lets me check if I get a text message from the trailer.
I also think I will look into the insurance option. Nothing it perfect. Best wishes PS That's not my picture, but one taken from Proven Industries website showing the lock.

My thoughts exactly. Early in the conversation when the officer was suggesting we handle it without an investigation,I abruptly said I was loseing battery and would call back soon as I find charger and place to plug in. I had mixed feeling whether it was a scam or attempt to have me incriminate myself. I emediatly called station and told operator the officer was standing by expecting my call. People have been paying off cops and courts as well as "Big Man in town" bullying authorities for centuries so when you think about it, a new "Big Man" has come to town.

It may not be true in all provinces, but I think that some provinces require non farm tractors to have a title.
Tractors may or may not need to be licensed, depending on where/how they are used/driven.
Nova Scotia TBN member EGON may be able to provide more information on this subject.

14.000. Introduction. Under the Permanent Trailer Identification (PTI) program, most trailers are issued a PTI plate and a permanent identification card rather than a regular trailer plate and registration card.

All my trailers have regular plates and titles as they predate the change…

Registration is for intervals of 5 years…

Of course not!

Titles, and whether they are required or not, would seem to be the issue, rather than trailers v/s tractors.
The primary purpose of a title for any wheeled vehicle is to protect the buyer.

Trailers require a title in most states!
In the USA, tractors unfortunately do not require a title, or registration, because not meeting highway safety requirements, they cannot be registered for roadway use!
In some states however, tractors as well as trailers, can use a farm plate, for local transport.

I recently talked to a Big Tex dealer in Nevada County, CA. He has had 6 brand new trailers stolen from his lot over the past few years. None ever recovered.

As a test, he took an obviously factory built trailer to the local DMV. He said it was homemade, and asked to register it with a new title and documents. DMV employee quickly agreed.

He is convinced all his stolen trailers got easily re-titled as homebuilts.

In some states yes. CT does not provide titles for trailers under 3,000 lbs. I registered a new trailer, sent in the manufacturer's title, and all I get was a registration and a notice that no title is provided for small trailers. But I registered a 14K trailer a month ago, and they mailed me a title.

So many big items I thought to add serial or reg numbers to, exposed or hidden, with a bead of weld. I wonder how many states or underwriters care to insure trailers. Read any policy that you think covers your stuff, there can be a lot or not in the fine print.

Example: I had Allstate until the early '90s and they covered two deer collisions. (Since then they have become among the worst at paying claims, weaseling out, bouncing checks, stalling, etc.) Two yrs ago neighbor hit a deer and was worried about insurance. Full coverage? No prob, right? Called Farm Bureau and was told full coverage never includes car/deer collisions. Full of something, I say. A policy is only as good as the company that backs it.

Thanks to the posts mentioning insurance, I decided to call my auto agent. I must admit, It was what I consider low cost for protection. I should have done that when I purchased the trailer. The price was - at $500 deductible - 13.20 for 6 months. I added $100 deductible for $23 per 6 months. Sure saves a lot of worry. Thanks
