I try not to use a splitting maul and rarely have to. 10" pc's qill fit into the stove, and since I stopped buying 4 ft nothing is that big that arrives at the doorstep. I work the pieces from the sides - usually ending up with 5 smaller when I have to. I like one hit splits and that is why I use a maul instead of a hammer and wedge. Besides, I hate to get hunting for that wedge where it lands to.
