$90 New Resident Tax

So much for me moving to Texas!!!

I would doubt they'd want me anyway

I'd not be surprised if MA has an "Old Resident Tax" - to be sure they get your coming & going /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I am a used car dealer in Tx (Dallas), and we typically execute both a bill of sale and the Application for Title (130).

The main purpose of the Bill of Sale is to formalize the transfer of ownership to the new owner for liability reasons.

I suppose that the 130 could sorta function as a bill of sale, but I'd do one anyway. There may be contexts in which a formal Bill of Sale could become useful. It's only a couple minutes work, I'd do it.

Aaah, yes, Billy. I think most, if not all, dealers use a Bill of Sale also, but you don't have to have that to apply for the Texas title. And in Dave's case, he's talking about giving a vehicle to his son, so I don't know what benefit he would derive from doing one, although as you said, if you've got a form, it doesn't take long and can't hurt anything.

sendero....... do you know if Texas will convert a Certificate of Origin into a title for a tractor? Seems to be a grey area that no one knows the answer? Would it be possible for you to ask the next time you are at the motor vehicle agency doing some transfer? thanks..... Junk

Thanks again, my son should be back in Texas today with the new truck, plans to get it inspected this morning and hopefully all the rest of the paperwork completed today as well. We downloaded the forms, I signed them, he has his insurance so think he's ready to go.

They left Virginia Monday morning, made it back last night safe and sound- a lot of driving but much better than the flight from Dallas. Went through Atlanta and ended up sleeping on the floor at the airport Saturday night, didn't make it to Virginia until late Sunday afternoon-- not much of a visit but glad they're done and back home.

Thanks again for the advice and information.

I'm not Billy and I don't play him on TV, but I do know that yes, you can get a Texas title from a Certificate of Origin because I did it once a few years ago. I bought a motorcycle from out-of-state and the dealer gave me a Certificate of Origin, which my county DMV happily taxed me on and gave me a title for it.

Pete, I think you misunderstood Junkman's question. You can certainly get a title with the Certificate of Origin (or Statement of Origin) for a motor vehicle. I did it on my last motorhome, which I purchased in Las Vegas, NV. But his question was about a title for a "tractor" and I don't think such a thing exists in Texas, but can't say for sure.

Last update- got a call from my son, truck is now legal in Texas and the tax was only $10 as hoped. Glad to have that done.
