Binoculars or Monocular

I finally made it to the big city today looking for optics. I looked at 3 monocular and decided I wanted something better. I decided on a pair of Nikon Monarch 7. They are 10x42. Not exactly compact but they are smaller than my old pair of Bushnell.

The sun is getting low now so I going to check them out.

Good choice. The camera brands of optics are probably the best deal for the money. While not up to what you can get with the European brands, the price difference is so huge that it's hard to justify the expense of Zeiss, Swarvoski or Lecia for casual use.

I couldn't believe some of the prices. They had about 3 dozen binoculars of all sizes priced from $50 to $500 in one display case. Then they had the "good" ones in another display case off to the side. These went from $70 to $2800. I looked through a couple of $1000 plus binoculars and decided they weren't for me.

doesn't this depend upon how far away you are from the front lens?

No. The aperture stop of almost all "refractive telescope" designs is the front element.
