bio-diesel

Have been using bio-diesel in my Kubota for the last half year. No problems. The exhaust smells like french-fry oil. It is refined soybean oil and as such is a renewable fuel. Seems like the exhaust smoke has been reduced too. Anyone else tried it?

I have heard of automotive applications for a soybean based diesel fuel. They did mention that the exhaust did smell like french fries. Where do you get fuel like that? I have not seen anybody advertise anything like that around here.

Good to know someone has had positive experiences with it. I wonder if you have to worry about cold weather gelling problems?

I've researched bio-diesel and would like to use it but found unless it is refined nearby shipping was cost prohibitive. I may have to try making my own /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif.

I am considering it myself. Quite costly though. One of the producers / marketers (in Mass) $2.50 a gallon plus $90 to ship a 55 gal drum. For pure biodiesel. Might have to pick it up. You can also blend it 20% bio 80% conventional, supposed to have all kinds of benefits.

The Wall Street Journal had an article on BioDiesel today. Looks like the
new farm bill allows BioDiesel producers a three year exception from
taxes on the "fuel." ADM is going to make some money on this. If it goes
the way Ethanol has, the tax break won't ever end.

Read an article regarding the bio-diesel today. It seems the "subsidy" or tax exemption would allow for a 1¢ subsidy for every 1% of biodiesel in a biodiesel/diesel blend. It would be capped at 20¢ a gallon. Apparently this would make a 20% biodiesel blend cost competitive with straight petroleum based diesel.

My favorite subject

Renewable fuels is a favorite subject of mine. Bio-diesels have been used in Germany for a number of years now with no problems. Some local producers are starting to sell bio-diesel which is really a 30% blend of soy oil and regular diesel. Any diesel engine can burn it with no problems.

Do a search on Commercial Biodesel to see if there is a supplier near you. The only supply in Missouri right now is in Columbia.

You can also produce your own bio-diesel at home if you want. Some do it from used vegetable oil they get from the grease pits at fast food places. Do a search on "VeggyVan" to read about a diesel camper van that has run thousands of miles around the US on used vegetable oil. You can also find links to various people who make their own and share the recipe.
