No Jony at least down here from Lake Okeechobee down you will see-em out in any pasture pretty frequently. Those pics are from my yard and they'll circle house all the time like nothing, When you get near-em though theyll tend to hop, skip and jump and keep there distance.

Hot walker- for horses?

Contraption in the background? -- racetracks always have one, or large stables- never seen one with a brick base- usually pretty portable.

No sandhill cranes in Me- closest is Gt. blue Herons and common egrets. The bald eagles will hunt the blue herons.

It only looks like brick, due to the no-climb horse fence in front of it (2"W x 4"H holes)

However, it is mounted on & bolted to a small concrete slab.

I have never seen one of those red-headed critters. Looks like Woody Woodpecker has been messing around with some shikepoke. ;)

We have large flocks of these in the hay and corn fields each summer around here in Canada
They are larger flocks every year and farmers are starting to complain about impact on crops.

Talking about the Herons being hunted by the Eagles?? I saw a young bald eagle being harassed by a heron of some type..It looked almost grey..He went at eagle like a Bluejay or a Mockingbird, after a crow..they were nearly the same size at kentucky lake, tn.

In Massachusetts we locally called them shypokes. In Maine they are called sh__tpokes!

We have quite a few of them around here. Usually you see them in pairs but sometimes 6 or 8 together. They hang out a lot in grassy areas and around nice neighborhoods with big lawns. They have become pretty traffic saavy also. I like it when they have a few chicks with them.
A friend of mine had one destroy his $300.00 wooden door pecking on it. He tried various things to keep it away and nothing worked. He bought a new door and it started pecking it too. He called animal control and they told him he would probably have to kill it to get it to quit.
He shot it with a .22 rife, and not wanting to waste it he ate it. He said it was good.
The bad part was he said its mate hung around over a week calling and calling for it. He said he wished he had never shot it, but couldn't keep buying doors.
