Hey All,

We've got 2 dogs that live outside. One is about 40 lbs. and the other is about 65 lbs. During the winter months they go through about twice as much food as they do in the summer. I fully expected this but the other morning I figured out what part of the reason is. There were at least 30 birds eating their dog food in their kennal. I've decided to start feeding only in the evening so they have a chance to eat before the birds get it all.

I've thought about making a bird proof dog bowl but I don't know if it's worth the trouble or not. Has anyone else run into this problem? We've got some of the healthiest fattest birds around!

I need to see a pic or video of a 65# dog letting birds eat its food. Lol. What kind of birds are they?

Have this issue also in winter time. I believe the birds are Grackles . Doesn't seem to bother dog

Same here. Mostly it's blue jays that get our dog food but I did see one of those big ringneck doves helping itself the other day. This is in the back yard and we keep chopped corn out for them in the front yard.

These work and your dog always has access to his food. They slow racoons and possums down just enough to allow a dog to do his thing when they come to visit.

Bluejays eat the dry cat food we keep out for barn cats. We gave in and put a pie plate of bird seed next to the cat food. The jays also like sunflower seeds, while the little tweety seed eaters prefer smaller seeds. Interestingly, the cats don't pay much attention to the birds, but they like to kill the squirrels when they try for the food.

Blue Jays will eat a lot of dog food if left out in the open. I used to have a very large German Shepherd that would hide around the corner of the garage until 3 or 4 Blue Jays gathered around his bowl, then he'd dive right into the middle of them and run them off. Then we had a large Pileated Woodpecker move into the area. It was large enough (and evidently mean enough) that Miko would let him eat all he wanted!

I finally got a Bergan Aut-O-Dine and mounted it on the light pole, but even with that I had to put a concrete block on the lid, because we found out that coons would climb up the pole, raise the lid, then dive right in for a feast.

How much are they and where did you get them? Are they battery or plug in?

I think I pay about $20/40#'s for the dog food.

Grackles & Blackbirds for the most part but everyone seems to be joining in. The kennel is literally in the woods with trees growing in it so there are a ton of birds.
