I think he was referring that he has dogs and they wouldn't get along with cats. We have 3 large dogs and it hasn't been to big a problem to teach them to respect the cats. They actually play together quite a bit.

If by next spring you have the doors back up, don't worry about them. The birds will only be there this year for a short period of time. I had the same problem last spring. Once they're born and mother makes them fly, they are gone for good. G

My cat sleeps in my barn year round.. usually nestled up in the hay.. or on a padded tractor seat.. or in a pile of horse blankets. Course it never gets colder than the teens in the coldest weeks in florida.. but I doubt 0' will make much difference.. if the cat has a dry place to get out of the wind. and cuddle up in some hay or blankets.

Funny enough.. One cold morning i went outside to see a cow sleeping in a dirt wallow near the barn. Had my dogs sleeping on either side of the cow.. wedged in nice and tight.. looked odd at first.. I knida thought the cow had fallen on the dogs or something.. but they were all taking advantage of each others body heat..

My barn cats and farm dogs get along fine.. Occasionally a dog will walk along and lick the cat and the cat gets this look on her face like 'yuck'.. Also.. the cat has learned not to run when the dogs walk up. If the cat runs.. the dogs -will- chase...

No, but they'll sure ^&%# up the birds.

What's the problem with the birds in the barn for *&%4^'s sake?

The swallows in my barn LOVE termites or any other bug that flies or wanders in their path.

If ya want birds outta you're barn, remove the nests. That's the only reason they're there. They'll roost somewhere else.

I hope you manage to take care of your problem. I have seen the hanging CD's work for both birds and squirrels.

Right now I have 3 problems with birds:

1 A bird built a nest right in the middle of my front yard.

2. The wife found it before I did and marked it.

3. I've been forbidden to mow it until the chicks have gone.

You can imagine how stupid this is going to look in another 3-4 weeks ... a 2 foot square tuft of grass sticking up from the middle of the yard!!!!!!
There's nothing I can do about it. The commandment has been received from on high and we dare not disobey. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

What kind of birds are they ? If starlings shoot! If songbirds, they are protected by law.

I think they are purple martins which are suppose to be good for eating mosquitos. I'm worried about the droppings. Heard about chicken dropping causing lung problems and possible death. Don't want anything like that to happen while I'm doing that extensive work in there.

If they are flying in and out and around in circils they are more than likely barn swallows, which are great, do they follow you around when you Mow? eating mosquitos by the hundreds and flys as well! leave them be, they make MUD nests and once the young are fledged they will stay out of the barn and roost in cover at night.

martins usually require specialized housing and want open areas not flying INSIDE a barn very often to the best of my knolage...

I get the biggest kick out of the swallows that have taken up summer residence next door. They follow me as I mow, and will even dive bomb me at times. The first few times it happened, I had to go inside and pee /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Now I just let them go about their silly way /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
