Biting black flies

There is a strip that is sold on a website that sells high quality tools in Canada, if my memory serves, called Lee Valley Tools. It is designed to be placed on the back of a ball cap to catch "circle flies" by a sticky substance which the flies land on./; The flies land on it and they cannot get off. I have never used it, but it looks very effective for any kind of fly that gets close. I think that the "circle flies" are deer flies, horse flies, cattle flies, any of those annoying flies that circle your head looking to bite you.
Lee Valley have a high reputation for exceptional stuff, but pricey. Check it out, FWIW.

Yep that works.
But here is a poor mans version: Duct tape on your hat/cap with sticky side out,.
Works and is $$ cheap!

My now deceased neighbor was a director of Union Carbide. He held over 200 patents. (one of witch was for deet*)
As a friend and neighbor his advice was to rub my neck and exposed skin with orange peels witch contain lots of vitamin C!
The other advice was to drink as much vitamin C as possible.
Fact is they could not patent vitamin C so proceeded to patent deet.

Some 20 years ago in early spring amidst the prime bug season I chainsawed in a marsh reeking of orange peels rubbed on my neck and exposed skin for hours without a single bug bite so his advise was valid! Must also add that a few CC's of oil in the chain saw also helped.

*during research they discovered vit C was the best deterrent but that could not be patented so they carried on until DEET came about.

That is a good tip for fly repellant. Orange peels are rich in citronella oil..all insects hate citron oils. Once while in a wild area of Florida, I came upon a wild orange tree. I picked a ripe orange, which I bit into through the skin. OH MY GOD that burned my lips and tongue like fire.. and it was very sour. Bugs never eat wild oranges, or their leaves, They don't even hang around them, so it atands to reason that they would avoid you if you rubbed yourself with moist orange peel.
There is another tree in the Swamps of Florida.. Called the Machineel (sp) tree which drips a sticky sap. Nothing will grow beneath it and the sap will seriously burn human skin. It is said that if a human blunders into contact with the tree with unprotected skin they may die.. I wonder if that sap is concentrated Citron oil.
Tomorrow I am going to rub my neck with the peel of my breakfast orange and test the effect on the blackflies here. What other good is an orange peel, anyways:yell:

DEET works for me enough to make it worthwhile using. They don't like to land on freshly applied DEET but they are still buzzing around in cloud above my head. I have to re-apply the DEET regularly and of course it stings the eyes if DEET+sweat drips into them.

I have a spritz bottle of liquid Deep Woods Off, spray that on the palm of my hand then wipe that on bare skin with my hand.

Burning dry cow patties is supposed to keep bugs away. Maybe I should rig up a patty burner as a 3pt hitch attachment?
