Here in mid-Georgia ticks are horrendous this year. I've bought a quart of permethrin concentrate to spray around the place and along the trails, but I've hesitated to go ahead with that idea. I've read that permethrin is deadly to cats. And our house cat is more important to spouse than the ticks or me. What a quandary...

Any ideas on how to solve this problem would be appreciated.

I'm wondering if double sided tape on your hat might get the Deer Flies. They annoy the crap out of me, and I have noticed they like to land on ones hat. The hand held bug zappers work great on Deer flies, but who carries one around?

Yes the double sided strips work well. Just stick to the back of your hat. I order a 12 pack each summer. Each strip lasts a week for me but your mileage may vary.

For our municipality, we only apply larvicide for the mosquito and black fly populations. The Town has a no spray policy. The larvicide is commonly called bti (Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis) . It is a bacteria that is havested from the ground and completely safe to pets and livestock. Consumers can buy it online in the USA as it does not require an applicator license. You might check with Tractor Supply or similar in Canada. Typically the bacterium is attached to ground corn or similar depending on the supplier. It is highly effective on mosquito larva thru stage 4. You may want to talk to a (vector) wholesaler as the prepackaged consumer prices are very high.

Estimate the acreage of wetlands you want to treat in order to estimate the quantity of bti. An alternative would be to talk with vector control contractors that apply bti to wide areas. There are back pack air pressure guns that can spray the bti up to 50 feet or so to reach into wetland areas.

If your local province has a vector control program, you might talk with that entity as well. It may be possible that you are in a service area... All they can do is say no...
