My neighbors YM2500 started belching black smoke and he found 1/4" of oil in his overflow bottle. Does anyone have any ideas? I have heard of water in the oil but never the other way around. A head gasket usually does'nt have oil in the water but makes it rusty looking. Any ideas will help.

Head gasket or a cracked head or block

Yep. I doubt that we are going to have a dissenting mechanical opinion on this one. Its time to pull the head and have a look around. Bet on the head gasket.

Well the head gasket would be the cheapest. We'll hope for that. Thanks

BTW, please keep us posted on how it looks. I always like to do that job because nothing else that is so quick and easy gives you so much of a view inside the engine. Also it is a job that can be done with hand tools while standing in a civilized position alongside the tractor.

Roger ain't that the truth, that's how I did mine. In the driveway, the shop hasn't been built yet.
