Hey everyone,
I've been using my 186D for about 5 months now. I got it just before the big snow in Md. It has a problem. It starts great runs fine below 2000 rpm, but as soon as I throttle up it bellows black smoke and the engine knocks. I changed the oil and it still acts up.Bad fuel maybe ? any help would be appreciated. Thanks Bob

Remember, all you got on a diesel is air, (both in and out), fuel, and compression, so easy stuff first. How about the air cleaner, fuel filter, injector cleaner, drain fuel and start with fresh, Last resort before going inside, Pull muffler off and make sure it's not clogged, test injectors.

Air flow is a strong function of engine speed. Breathing restriction is most noticable at high engine speed. Don't be afraid to run it for a few minutes with the air cleaner off. While you have the muffler off - run it like that too. You can run it without the muffler as long as you want, and can stand the noise!

All the things mentioned so far are good to do. But my feeling is that it's a timing problem. Either valve clearances (.008") cold. Or fuel injection timing (including worn cams or worn pump) or both. Gary J.
