This one is of the dash and controls on the KM554. It is not a great picture but shows the knob that seems to be connected to "nothing". That's the one with the white "Z" on it and also the one my dealer did not know what it was for, other than saying it may have been the old hood release. There is a white wiring connector next to it.

You can see it is just above the 4wd lever left of the Forward/Reverse lever. The kill switch knob is at the same height to the right of it, directly below the ignition switch. The kill switch is hidden by the steering wheel.(sorry)

So does that give you enough information to answer my 4 questions?
Thanks,

3RRL,

I have a KAMA 454. It's the same year as your's but 3 cyc. Mine is direct injection. Mine does not have glow plugs and you can determine this by not seeing heavy wires going to each cylinder. Mine has intake preheat. This device is located on the intake with one wire and the fuel line extended from the last injector. The compression release is a lever arm located at the back on the valve cover. You can't miss it. The knob you pointed out in your photo would be the compression release knob.

So I would say Yes, NO, NO and yes to your questions

Thanks for the information Paddy,
Am I correct, then, that the compression release knob is currently disconnected? I say this because I can pull on it and it slides in and out without resistance...it's doing nothing. I believe Chip referred that also. I'm asking because my tractor is at my property (250 miles away) and I can't run out to look at it.
Thanks,

Rob,
Yes, you have a direct injection Feidong 495 engine, without glow plugs, this is a great starting engine. At 2300 rpm this engine makes 55hp. It will have no glow plugs, but will have compression release, if there are two knobs above the transmission one is the fuel kill and one is CR. the CR is the one that is hard to pull (both knobs will kill a running engine) Some do not have the cable installed as CR is considered non-essential (no we dont' need to go through the whole thing, it is a great idea on cold starts).

My comments about the number of pull knobs were about KAMA TS354, not KM series which is a completely different tractor with completely different engines. Sorry if it created some confusion.

Thanks for the confirmation Chip, I appreciate all the help.

I'll see if I can fasten the pull knob cable but I don't really see it necessary in my case. Mine starts sooo easy. I do like the fact that using the compression release valve lets the oil pressure build up before any loads on the crankshaft bearings, wrist pins etc. Sounds like that would be better for the engine and the starter.

Anyway, I'll see what I can do to hook it up and try to use it.
Thanks again.

Chip might be able to confirm/deny. But there's a good chance the linkage on your 554 is similar to that on my 454. Weather's awful right now, but I can try for a photo or two when conditions permit. I'll upload ASAP, unless Chip advises it's not worthwhile

3RRL,

It does sound like it is not hooked up. If the cable is there, it will be very easy. As stated there is a lever on the back of the cast iron valve cover. It is about 3" long. Facing the engine from the front, the lever is at about 11:00 o'clock in the rested position. At 9:00 it should be full compression release. So you can imagine the cable pulls down. The cable is attached to the lever with a little nut and bolt with a hole drilled thriogh. There is a return spring on the this lever. Make sure it does just that, return smoothly. If not, there are two bolts holding the bushing the lever rotates through. If you loosen them, the return spring will jump in to action. Ten slowly tighten them while work the lever up and down.

Greg and Paddy,
Thanks for the information. Too bad about the weather in your part of the country Greg. We're getting a cold rainy spell this weekend also. It's dropped from the mid 80's to the 50's in a week. I would appreciate any pics you might be able to post. It would sure help to "see" what I'll be looking for when I get up North.

Paddy's description and tips to "work it" is very good and I should be able to figure it out, but nevertheless, the old saying ... a picture is worth a thousand words. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'm very pleased to have all you guys pass on this information. I learned a lot from it.
Much obliged,
