Blizzard in Mid Atlantic

Too much snow for my 2wd Iseki but I managed. Upgrading to 4wd this spring.

The hill was almost too much and I struggled many times to drive up. Had to use the blade while using gravity (reverse) to clear the hill. Couldn't plow the road any wider since there are drop-off's. Fun fun fun.

Looks like you did a good job with what you had. That road is a bear and I would definitely get a 4x4.

LOL - And why have we not heard of THESE revised predictions until recently?? Yeah I know the drill, this is the big chill leading up to the global warming...........

I'm really sick of all the Al Gore slams. For anybody interested in some real science here is some analysis from Dr. Jeff Masters, founder of the Weather Underground and a former hurricane hunter with NOAA

Heavy snow events--a contradiction to global warming theory?
As I discussed in my previous post, record-breaking snowstorms are not an indication that global warming is not occurring. In fact, we can expect there may be more heavy snowstorms in regions where it is cold enough to snow, due to the extra moisture global warming has added to the atmosphere--an extra 4% since 1970. Snow is not the same as cold, and we have to look at global temperatures, not snowfall, to evaluate whether global warming is occurring. Heavy snow can act to bring down global temperatures, as occurred in December 2009, when the Northern Hemisphere experienced its second greatest snow extent on record (only 1985 saw greater December snow cover since reliable snow records began in 1967). Global average land temperatures, as a result, were just 31st warmest on record, even though global ocean temperatures were the 2nd warmest on record. It will be interesting to see what global temperatures did in January, when the statistics are released next week. The global temperature of the lower atmosphere as measured by satellites was the warmest on record in January, and by a considerable margin. I'll discuss this finding in more detail once the blizzard is over. It's also of interest to note that December temperatures in the U.S. were the 18th coldest in the historical record, but January temperatures were 0.3ーF above average, according to the National Climatic Data Center. As a whole, it's been a colder than average winter in the U.S., but not greatly so. However, December snow cover was the greatest on record in the contiguous U.S., and January's ranked sixth. Snow cover records go back 44 years, to 1967.

Hey Tlbuser,

Love the red! Last time I was snowed in I did something similar to my custom .308 ...

On the third day, I woke up and looked out the window.. and said "I don't think I'll make it to work today"... my Wife sat straight up in bed and said "OH.... YOU ARE GOING TO WORK TODAY!!" ... I'd say she had husband induced cabin fever!!!

Hang in there and keep warm!

Phill

:D Yea, she's tired of me too. All I did was suggest that she plow the driveway while she was out taking care of her horse. I was busy with a Wii bowling tournament

How is discussing global climate change, the scientific data, political?

Oh wait, I forgot. Data and facts are irrelevant. If you say it is politics and link a former politician's name with it, it makes it all go away.

I believe in fairies too.

As my tractor is well & truly stuck...and it slid off the driveway at the lowest spot, over the underground spring, that keeps it nice & soft, and unfrozen, it is sinking. It is parked now, my (way tougher than me) husband is out there digging, and I'm in here sniveling about the cold and shopping for the massive snow blower.

I think I'll go get pictures of the tractor, and hope that the bright white doesn't wash out all the depth so that I can print out the picture, frame it and hang it in the garage over the snow blower next year!

We got over 2' here in Mount Airy last weekend and woke up this morning to another 6" or more. Plowing with the blade is mostly ineffective as there is nowhere for the snow to go, which means lots of FEL work (2WD gear shift, chains now on order!).

So let me ask this question.....

What sort of machine would it take to just be able to drop the blade/plow and push through this? Would a pick-up with a plow have enough oommph to do it? My Dad's neighbors brought over 2 100hp cabbed McCormicks with rear blades, he said even with 30" on the ground they could drop the blade and go. He was pretty impressed since he had just spent two days with his 38hp tractor piling snow.

Pickup w/ blade.

No, not here in VA on this 30"-er. I saw a F250 w/ 1500lbs of sand in the bed working a driveway... backup get some speed and plow 4-6'... backup, repeat....

Had a guy come through with a Deere 310 backhoe, and he was able to drop the bucket and push a straight path down the center of the road.

The guy that followed was on a JD 5055 cab ( i think... know it was 50xx) and he was pulling a rear blade and kept getting pulled to the side by the resistance of the snow. I think he would have done a whole lot better with chains. R1's + ice didn't make for alot of traction.

A day or so later a medium duty F550 came through and was able to push the edge of road snow banks back so we could run two cars wide on the street.... however he was only able to move about 1-1.5' of snow at a time with a VERY sharp angle on the blade. When he used too shallow of an angle the truck would bog and be unable to move.

20+ inches on Saturday then another 20" yesterday. Out plowing with tractor & moving big piles with LB115 backhoe. Here's one of my guys in my Challenger 48HP plowing out a Customer. I'll see if I can get some backhoe pics. I actually delivered a lot of firewood before the 2nd blizzard hit. We've had a record 70" snow in nearby Wilmington, DE.
My rocket scientist neighbor who thinks his Ford explorer is a Humvee drove into his back yard, slid down a bank and got pinned-up against a tree. LOL

I'm sick of snow. yesterday was nasty out there, I pushed my drive and my neighbors a couple times. Today the wind stopped and the sun came out, so we got a little melting started. I cleaned out my drive, my neighbor, and helped clear out another neighbor with a long drive. can't wait for spring.

We got lucky yesterday, only 4.5 inches:D:D

Either a v-blade or snowblower. It really is all about traction, having enough of it to overcome the resistance of the object to be moved. V-blades offer less initial resistance but can take multiple passes.

I'm making a 8' Artic poly plow into a skid steer mount for my soon to arrive 80 hp tractor and buying a 7' snowblower. Next year I'm doing more snowblowing and less plowing.
Kinda sucks because we have winters with only 25" of snow, then we get some with 50-70" snow so you need pretty serious equipment, but some winters it may not get a lot of work.

These firewood racks are 4' high. This all compacted snow that slid off the barn roof. Good thing I probably won't need this particular supply of firewood until next year.

I would say chains on the rear tires if not all 4. I hate messing with chains, though.
