Blizzard of 1978

Yep, on the emergency supplies thing. On 9/11, I almost rear-ended a car stopped for no apparent reason on the main drag. Turned out, he was the end of a long line of cars waiting to top off their gas tanks...

I lived on a lake about 7 miles from Warsaw, IN during the blizzard. It wasn't apparent if the roads had been cleared into town yet but supplies were getting low. Some of us piled in the van to give it a try. Neighbors gave us money to pick up stuff they needed. We made it back with mostly beer and cigarettes, maybe a gallon of milk or two.

Lake effect snow always amazes me with the amounts it can dump in the bands, but this thing was system snow. It was so widespread. A week after it started here in the midwest, it finished on the east coast. They got hit pretty hard as well.

When you added the blizzard on top of endless lake effect snow that year, it sure made a difference for us. I remember both 77 and 78 being big for snowfall in Western Michigan. My dad bought a four wheel drive (Ram Charger) after the winter of 77, back then it didn't seem like ownership of a four wheel drive vehicle was as prevalent as it is now.

We had a different "blizzard of '78" here in New England. Not too bad where I was living (south-central N.H.), because the storm didn't hit here until evening but in Mass. it hit in the afternoon, and cars were stranded everywhere. As I recall, most of eastern Mass. was completely closed for about a week.
