I learned about mechanical advantage as a lifeguard on a whitewater course. Its amazing how much pressure moving water can put on, for example, a canoe pinned against a bridge abutment. But a couple carabiners, a few loops in some rope, some figure 8 knots, and you can quickly gain a huge mechanical advantage and move a ton of weight with just your body. I'll be using a similar method to drag some logs out of some tight spots on hills this spring that I can't get into to easily with the machine.
