Hey everyone,

I have a block foundation that supports my back deck. It was fine when I
moved in 12 years ago, but it is crumbling in spots.
I what would cause this? How can this be fixed?

Bummer. I've never saw that before. But I'm not a block guy.

Hopefully the experts will chime in with cause and solution.

Spalling. Same thing you see on sidewalks. Just age in some cases, but the blocks could have been bad from the start. Moisture encroaches and a chemical reaction starts. Only way I know to fix it is to break out any loose material and fill with new concrete. Then maybe coat with Drylock paint or a foundation coating.

What's on the other side of the block, do you know?

X2 with Diggin It. Plus probably over the years the freeze thaw cycle from snow and rain has weakened the block where it chips off. I think Quickcrete sells a mortar patch mix in like a gallon pail. HD and Lowes sells it. Before patching put a coat of concrete adhesive ( comes in a plastic quart bottle ) on the repair area....it lets the patching mortar adhere better.
