John,

If it were me...I would buy allen socket.

The bolt might work...but seeing that Raybee needed that long extension, I would rather not take the chance of something going wrong myself, if it were my tractor. Example might be the bolt head being a little loose and stressing that plug somehow and splitting it, or slipping and rounding out that plug so that even the right allen socket now will not grip...

Just a thought, but I would not take the risk myself...maybe if you do buy the allen socket you could sell it afterwards here in the TBN classifieds for half price or something like that and it would not end up costing you much more than that bolt and two nuts...

Just a thought...

Right tool for the right job. If the tool is only $9.00 that is awfully cheap versus rounding out the plug or even worse, maybe doing damage to the block itself. Now I might be exagerating some, but remember, murphy's law. The trick of putting the two nuts on a bolt might be something good to remember if you out in the middle of no where and you have an emergency but I wouldn't call this an emergency. If the tool was a few hundred bucks then maybe I would try it also.

Just my 2 cents again.

Ok I have a great idea, we can establish a lending service here on TBN, kinda like your buddy coming over and borrowing a tool from ya. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Just would need to have the US mail involved and the exchanges may be a little more difficult, but hey I am sure we can work out the details. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif After all we are all one big family here on TBN...

So JWR when you buy the 17 mm wrench, I am next in line to borrow it

Henro & thcri... But if I buy that $9.00 allen my family won't be able to eat for a day. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I did question him about rounding the corners on the plug. He said that the nut fits tight and the socket wrench rests flat against the plug keeping it aligned when you apply torque. He said the allen has a tendency to tilt when you strat applying torque.

NY Yankees Fan... If I buy the allen I will send it to you free of charge when I am finished!

I tried to use the bolt and two nut method to install my block heater. What I ran into was no matter how tight I jammed the two nuts together, they would still turn when I tried to loosen the plug. It was worth the $10 to buy the 17mm allen wrench. I used the long end of the wrench in the plug and a 12 inch pipe on the short end of the wrench and the plug came right out. It's not worth the hassle of something going wrong that might end up causing damage costing more than $10 for the wrench.

NY Yankees Fan... After LarryG experience and others comments I think I will spring for the allen socket. I am serious about sending the socket to you when I am finished. My plan is to install the heater when I do my 50 hour maintenance. At this point I estimate I will be doing the maintenance in June or July. If you can wait that long I will send it to you for free! The only thing that I ask is that you mail it to another TBNer when you are finished. Wonder how many TBNers could make use of the tool? It may float around for years!

JWE

I plan on adding the block heater when I do my 100 hour service in a few weeks, so I will be able to send it to you when I am done with it.

JWE,

You mess up that block and you won't be eating for a year!!! And then you always got the wife factor in there that might think "life insurance" /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gifand you know what happens then. Or the tractor sits there broken down and you have to do everything by hand.
