Block heater: OEM or aftermaket?

I think you can get it for $130 shipped, from jacks small engine. I have an install posted I think. The OEM one is nice because you can remove most of it in the summer months. It does work well, and my Massey likes to be warm at least when it’s below 20F and windy (tractor sits under roof, but no walls).

OEM is probably the best option. As the old saying goes...buy once, cry once.

It's worth the money.

Hello,
Just bought a used 2018 1715:). I will need a block heater before Winter (Northern Ontario). Are there any aftermarket available that will fit the frost plug or do I have to buy OEM?
Sent Zero start/Temro an e-mail with engine model # & link to You Tube installation video. Nice lady said they don't make a block heater for that engine. I suggested that she should forward information to design dept as this is a very popular engine.
I'm sure there's one out there that would fit but doesn't cross reference.
Thanks.

Is it not possible to use a "tank heater"?
They are cheap.

It sounds better and smokes less.

Incomplete combustion.

If I allow sufficient time for the glow plugs to heat up, aside from cranking slightly slower, mine doesn't sound, or act any different.

OEM is probably the best option.

Unless you are, or know a machinist, OEM is the only option for a GC block heater.

I say that, because someone on here once made an adapter, to allow a widely available aftermarket heater fit.

Everything that is out there aftermarket in the right size, is too long to use on a GC.

The heating element can not extend out of the housing, and into the block at all. The cylinder sleeve is right inside.

And, because it's a subcompact, there isn't sufficient space to put an inline hose heater.

How much is the tractor worth? Price of a block heater is insignificant by comparison.

Do you want a high powered heater to warm stone cold engine to starting temperature in 20 minutes ? Or a low powered heater to maintain starting temperatures when plugged in 24/7

I bought the OEM heater, and yes, it was a lot more expensive than other options... on the other hand, it works quite well, installed easily, and doesn't leak. Still going strong after 9 or 10 years. It's also convenient that the cord can be removed and replaced with a garden hose cap in the summer- - keeps the junk out of there and saves the power cord from damage.

One other cheap fix you could try is to lay a 100-watt (or so) incandescent bulb under the hood, then cover the hood -- the whole engine compartment-- with an old blanket. Somewhat inconvenient, but that also works.

I use the heater any time the temp's below 20; I figure it just makes for a lot less wear & tear on everything when starting the engine. (But don't forget to allow the hydraulic oil to warm up sufficiently before heavy operation!)

PS-- And Ray, my original battery is STILL in there & working well! :cool2:

apps - JMHO but you are going the wrong way with a block heater. I've had block heaters and lower radiator hose tank heaters. The tank heaters are much more efficient and if everything goes **** up - all you need to fix the situation is a new lower radiator hose. If your tank heater starts leaking - good luck.
A tank heater is the only efficient method if you need quick warm up or are in some really cold weather. Besides a tank heater is not OEM and does not cost $100 plus.
