Block heater or tank type heater

Go with the lower hose heater. Plug mine in for a couple hours before I use my tractor and the glow plugs hardly come on!

Sorry for the error. Tractor supply no longer sells the 6 thousand watt heater because it was melting the radiator hose AND the radiator.:D

Yikes!:confused2: I found that one hard to believe, but I guess anything's possible!

I have heard of using a hair dryer or heat gun directed into the air intake a few minutes before starting I have never tried it but it sounds like a good idea
Not enough heat, awkward and time consuming . Fix it right once instead of make do with some farmer fix.

tractor supply in iron mountain should be about 45 minutes from you. the inline radiator hose heater they sell will work real well. You just need to know if your hose is 1and 1half or 1and 3quarters in size. Six thousand watts, 29dollars. One year warranty. Easy to install, if ever a problem easy to replace. Some of the block heaters are held by friction which could leak. Sometimes you have to remove an item from the engine. I know it sounds crazy but I was told I should use a specific plug in the block or the heater wouldn't work because of the design of the water flow. That plug was blocked by the injection pump.

six thousand watts. Should have it pre-heated to start in 5 to 10 minutes.

This may help start the engine but it does nothing to assist initial lubrication. Heating the coolant warms the block and the head (which helps starting) but also warms the oil as it passes through the warmed block. And that improves oil flow during those critical first minutes when excessive wear can occur. If you use the tractor every day this is not a big deal but if it has not been run in a long time the residual oil film can be minimal.

I would add that in less severe winter climates, good synthetic oil provides benefits because of the lower pour temperature (makes cranking easier) and better adhesion to metal surfaces.

Another thought, You might not need the block heater all night. A timer to turn on the power a few hours before you need the tractor will help.

You need a flat section of iron to stick it on and heat transfer will be much lower than an immersed heater. My oil pan is aluminum and it's not flat on the bottom so (unlike a car) probably yours is too, so that won't work.
