The second type as I understand it is a Hobbs meter, similar to the ones aicraft use to determine the number of hours on a planes engine. Different RPMs result in different hours on the engine. It is certainly a more accurate way to determine the true wear on the engine.

Rich, I can't say for sure, but I think your "proofmeter" is, in fact, the second kind. You can either follow the drive cable or check it against your watch sometime to see.

Here's what's straight out of my owners manual for my 06' Massey GC2300

..The hour meter in the center of the gauge indicates engine and tractor use to assist in maint. intervals. the extreme right digit indicates 1/10 hour intervals.

NOTE: Hours are calculated at 1800 rpm average.....


ok...so what does that really mean.... it seems the hours were piling on quicker than real time when I was mowing this weekend.

Hobbs is a brand name not a meter type although they are well known for their hour meters. The Hobbs hour meters found in aircraft measure "true" hours whenever the master switch is turned on. There is typically another hour meter located within the tachometer that measures hours based on engine RPM.

I don't know the official name for an hour meter based on engine RPM but I have heard them called useage meters.

It means that if your tractor is running at 1,800 rpms for 6 minutes, the hour meter will increase by 0.1.

If the engine runs more than 1,800 rpm, it will take less than 6 minutes for the hour meter to increase by 0.1. If it's running less than 1,800 rpms, it will take more than 6 minutes.

It means that if your tractor is running at 1,800 rpms for 6 minutes, the hour meter will increase by 0.1.

If the engine runs more than 1,800 rpm, it will take less than 6 minutes for the hour meter to increase by 0.1. If it's running less than 1,800 rpms, it will take more than 6 minutes.
