You will never get the full 9 gal out of a 9 gal system. Some of the 3 gals left is in the hoses, cylinders and small cavities in my opinion.

Ditto fluid capacities listed are for dry compartments/components which once filled up to spec's are very difficult to get totally dry again.

No disrespect intended. I guess there might be someone who would reuse old oil.

The measurement of oil is indicative of how much did not drain out. Or, how much contaminated oil remained in the system. 1/3 of system capacity did not drain. That does not seem like a good thing. I do not think that is as designed.
The filter was fairly new with not many hours. I did not change it. I will change it with the next oil change. Base on the hours vs time; I guess it will be 5 hours or no more than 1 year which ever comes first. This is one of three tractor and it rarely gets used. At close to $200 to change all the oils and filters, it gets to be very expensive to justify at only 5 hours a year. It is still cheaper and more convenient than renting.

It sounds like you had a considerable amount of water in the oil and if your filter had a cellulose filtering medium the water will swell the paper and make it highly restrictive to flow and if water contaminates the oil, it will form sludge that will rapidly plug a filter element.

I just changed the filter the week before.
New fluid and I put it pack to work. Bad news..It started boiling again after about 15 minutes of running the shredder. I quit shredding and just used the FEL for the next 4 hours moving dirt with no problem. Why would the PTO cause the fluid to boil?

It might not have anything to do with PTO but three point hitch or remote hydraulic is turned on. Just guessing?

What brand & model tractor? If the tractor in question has a hyd engaged pto then pto clutch or valve could be causing the hot hyd oil.

It is a IH 584.
Can you explain. I am a retired mechanic but I am not familiar with the mechanics involved.

I'll have to do some research on IH 584 but I'll bet the pto is hydraulically controlled. If valve or seals on hyd controlled clutch are leaking that can cause hyd oil to heat.
