I can't really see the drive shaft but what I think was the drive shaft looks bent.
Drive shaft should spin without any up or down movement.

Does your tractor have grease fittings on the universal joints?

Last night I did a little investigating. I unbolted and slid the 4WD drive shaft boot back to expose the front universal joint. The front universal looked and felt fine - there was no play in the joint at all. There was a very little bit of play in the shaft going forward into the front differential. I did notice that there was not much grease packed in against the seal, so I will be packing that in another day or so. After I got the boot back on, I checked the back universal joint on the 4WD driveshaft and noticed a little bit of play in it. I could move the universal joint about a 1/4 inch in one direction and not at all in the other direction. This universal joint has some serious rust on it and I am sure there is no grease left in the thing at all. I think this is where the driveshaft wobble and noise is coming from. I was able to find a new joint at southern global tractor parts for $125 and will be replacing it.

In case anyone was wondering where things were at with this... Replacing the universal joint on the 4WD driveshaft got rid of the noise! I am relieved that it had nothing to do with the gears!

Well, unfortunately the sound is back. The sound is still coming from the front of the tractor, however it is making the noise in 4WD and 2WD now and most notably in reverse. I am going to remove the 4WD driveshaft and try driving it around to see if the noise is still there. Not sure if I mentioned it in a previous post, but the owner that I bought the tractor from had the clutch replaced... Could there be anything in the clutch that could be out of adjustment that might be making the "howling" sound that I am experiencing.

You are right about the driveshaft being bent. A friend of mine that is more mechanically inclined thought the same thing. He took the 4WD driveshaft off and found that it had a slight bend along the entire shaft. He was able to put it in a press and get it straight. He hooked back up today and I am happy to say that this did infact remedy the noise. Now I hope it did not do to much damage to the bearings. Time will tell.
