Front-End Loader Bolt-on Hook for FEL

   / Bolt-on Hook for FEL #11
This has come up before...and I bought 12 weld on hooks to weld to drilled plates to offer to those who don't have welder's, but I never got them built-I guess I should?
I agree with those who suggested getting weld on hooks and welding them to small pieces of plate then bolting to the bucket top ledge. This is what I did.

IMO,I think this is the cleanest method of using a weld on hook:)

These have worked great for me. Each rated at 10,000#. Cost about $10 each. No welding and easy to put on. I re-inforced with 1/2" plate.

Thanks for all the comments and ideas/advice. So many good solutions presented here. I'll have to ponder this one some more. I may end up using the slip hook and use some steel plate reinforcement. I have a welder but don't trust my welding just yet when it comes to picking up heavy loads and hence my reason to want to bolt hooks on the bucket.

You should be able to find them somewhere south of the 49th.

Just found these at Harbor Freight. Don't know if they include bolts etc.

Got a pair of 10,000lb tow hooks off ebay for $6 + $4 shipping. Decided to weld them on.

No matter what I definately recommend strengthening the top bucket edge prior to mounting hooks. Nothing worse than bending your bucket.

I welded c-channel to the top of my bucket and then bucket hook to the top of the c-channel.

My bucket will never bend now, my loader is not strong enough to overpower the top edge reinforcement.

I posted in a post on bucket hooks.

Looks like a great install, I like those better than just the chain grab hooks, allows the use of nylon or steel cable sling, rope or looped chain. where with the crab hooks you of course are limited to chain.
What I don't like about using 2 of any type hook is the fact that now you have to connect to both of them.
That's why I went with the single center mounted receiver, use it all the time with it's many options.

If you have a lighter duty or single wall bucket for sure or if your center mounting like I did.
But with these HD JD double wall buckets, with the hooks in line with the mounting point like in Dirt Ditch's picture, I can guarantee you his will never bend, like you said the loader doesn't have the capacity. Plus the outer edge is much stronger than the center also for balance you have to use them in tandem with a yoke type setup.
Like I said mine is center mounted so probably a good idea to reinforce, though I haven't done mine yet. My loader has a capacity of around 1500 pounds and I know I've never had that much hanging on mine, but I have had probably close to 1000 on there with no signs of deflection, never mind bending.

When I bolted the receiver on mine I installed steel pipe spacers/sleeves on the bolts so when I tightened it, it wouldn't squash the walls, that really stiffened it up.

Couple of pics of my center mount, with a load on it looking across the top edge. another of a single wall bucket i got for small money after someone did collapse the top edge with a weld on hook in the center. Couldn't believe someone would do that! pic shows it after I jacked it back up, then I shortened it to make a mini bucket.

I ended up testing the bucket hooks late last winter. Went to help dad with a simple job pulling a Dodge 600 grain truck w/16ft bed that had not been started in 3 years out of the shed. Dad wanted me to put the cutting edge of the bucket level with the back of the bed to catch it if the breaks did not work. This was level ground of course. With the chain around both bucket hooks and hooked down to the bottom of the truck frame and my 800+lb ballast box on the 3pt I started pulling in low reverse. I could not understand why it was pulling so hard, but unknown to us was the rear brakes were seized up. both sets of duals left 40ft of trenches in the dirt floor of that shed. I don't know how much weight was on those hooks but I am sure it was more than the lifting capacity of the loader and without any damage done.

When I bolted the receiver on mine I installed steel pipe spacers/sleeves on the bolts so when I tightened it, it wouldn't squash the walls, that really stiffened it up.

That was a good idea. I did not think of sleeves for the bolts. That is why mine are welded on.
